How do I import a theme?

  • Unknown's avatar

I downloaded the file for a vantage theme for my blog. I’ve used this before but with the new format for choosing themes, I cannot find where the spot to import a theme.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That’s because it does not exist on WordPress.COM hosted blogs. The only themes we can use on WordPress.com blogs like your blog are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/

There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs for security reasons and we cannot:
    upload any third party themes,
    create child themes,
    create our own themes,
    edit templates,
    create own own layouts,
or use stylesheets from other themes.

    Relevant support docs:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/

There is no upgrade you can purchase that changes that.

WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can create themes, upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database, etc. If you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes into a site then you will have to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.org install.

If you’d like to stick with WordPress.com, is there anything I can do to help you find a theme that you like in the list at http://wordpress.com/themes/ ?

    Hello designsimply,
I didn’t askt the question, but I’d like to take you up on that offer. Would that be okay? My head is spinning from trying to find the right theme. I’m planning to combine my wp-site schoenheitdeslebens.wordpress.com and my business-site http://www.melanie-kemper.de on wordpress.com. I think I’d like something like the ‘harmonic theme’ but I just can’t decide… So if you, or anyone else, would like to help me come to a decision, I’d be very grateful!

@schoenheitdeslebens, sure! I’d love to help. Picking out a theme is a very interesting topic to me.

May I ask what appeals to you about Harmonic?

From your content, I can see that you have a few lovely photo galleries. The images are beautiful! I love photography. :) Here are a few themes that came to my mind after looking at the sites you linked:

    Snap
It has a nice, optional featured image slider on the home page, a nice space for a welcome message or blurb, and I like the simple navigation at the top. It looks nice with featured images.

    React
I like the space for a welcome message on the home page combined with a space for three project or portfolio pages below.

    Studio
I like the portfolio page template and that you can change the aspect ratio for images displayed on them.

    Confit
This one is a free theme. It was designed with food and restaurants in mind, but I have seen some really nice adaptations of it for lots of different kinds of content. It has space for a large background image on the right, which is cool if you want to showcase really big images but also have content displayed easily on the same page.

    @designsimply
Wow, those are some great choices. I would have overlooked them! So far the Studio Theme looks good to me. The Confit also. Thank you so much!
Why do I like Harmonic and such. Okay, that’s gonna take a while. I’ll try and be quick ;-) My homepage is a business page for life coaching. I want to do more than just put a virtual business card online, I’d like to communicate with my actual and future clients. That’s the one thing, so I need a business page where I can represent what I offer, who I am, but also useful information or interesting pieces of trivia. Not on a regular basis, however. So I’ll need static pages as well as something close to magazin pages, a semi-static page ;-)
The second aspect is – as you have seen – photography. My photos are an important part of my being and my being a coach. I use them to coach myself but they can be used to transfer messages. They are also the result of my own experiences through coaching. So that will be the blog part.
To summarize this: I want to build a complex site that I can use to interact with other people – creatives, colleagues, clients… I myself like to be flexible, so I’d like to have many options. Even if I don’t use them all now, at some point I will. Also it’s important to me to change colors. I like going with the seasons. It’s also an important part of my coaching. So I’d like to give the blog a certain atmosphere. And that’s why I like to have a full-width-picture as a front page. Also, I don’t like it too clean. I love vintagy looks, but not too heavy. But I have realized already that I can give such a look to clean themes as well, so I guess it doesn’t have to be the main thing to look for.

Complex, many options, great flexibility, development over time and atmoshpere… I think that might be what I need in a Theme… Oh my, can you make sense out of all that? ;-)

Makes sense to me. I lean more toward clean, simple design myself, rather than grungy—but you really can make a huge impact on a clean design with a few well-place images or customizations such as background and header images.

You could totally try Harmonic. :) To me, that site is only about the image on the home page and based on what I saw in the sites you linked, I thought it would be better to have a theme that combined a little content on the home page as well.

We also have a whole section of magazine themes at https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/magazine/ that you might just want to spin through to see if anything jumps out at you. Of those themes, a couple free ones I really like are Zuki and Expound.
