How do I insert photos into a post at the full pre-formatted size ?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been creating new posts from the ‘new post’ on my main page. This allows me to insert pre-formatted photos DIRECTLY into the post from my photos folder, at the pre-formatted size, filling the frame. It also kept a copy in the media library as part of the process.

Today the ‘new post’ process was changed. Now to insert a pre-formatted photo I have to load it into the media library, which automatically reduces its size and degrades its appearance when inserted in the post.
This is not what I want to be doing.

Is there some way to change back to the previous procedure ?
Why won’t the insertion process keep the original size and appearance ?

  • There are currently some problems with the New Post button in the Reader due to ongoing changes in the software. A reversion to the previous interface is unlikely. Staff has advised us to use the post editor in the main dashboard instead.

Go to your blog’s main dashboard (http://lifeatlacombe.wordpress.com/wp-admin/) and create a new post by clicking on Posts ->Add New in the sidebar menu. You’ll find creating posts this way is much more stable and provides many more options for making it look exactly like you want. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/new-post-screen/ Existing posts you can edit by going to Posts ->All Posts and clicking the Edit link under the post title.

See here for inserting images from the post editor: http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/adding-images-to-posts-or-pages/

P.S. even with the old interface images were uploaded to the Media Library, you just weren’t aware of the step. Uploading an image using the process in the link above does not change it’s size or quality.

    Hello Kokkieh
I have tried the approach you suggested.
It’s not working for me. See my test post:
    http://markspitzerdesigns.wordpress.com/2014/07/10/york-overview-test-post/
I inserted two photos of a cathedral, one full-sized, one reduced to 1000 pixels wide. Both of them were auto-formatted by the media center and inserted as very reduced, not as the full 1000p width I’ve been using. The effect on the blog post for the viewer is dramatic, as you can see if you look at some of my recent posts.
    Any other suggestions ??

  • The maximum content width for your theme is 585 pixels, so if you’re uploading images 1000 pixels wide you’re anyway uploading images almost twice the maximum width your theme can display. I use the same theme as you and never upload images wider than 600 pixels. Any wider just wastes media storage. The exception is if you want to use an image as a featured image – then the image must be 1000×288 pixels big. See the bottom of the theme support doc for those specs: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyeleven/
Also see this doc on optimising images for uploading: http://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/

Image size isn’t changed when you upload images, but is when you insert them. When inserting an image into a post you can select whether it must be small, medium, large, or full size (if the full size image is more than 585pixels it will still only show 585 pixels).

If you insert an image today at medium size, the next image you insert will have medium selected by default. That might have happened here. You can change it on already added images by clicking on the image and then on the pencil icon that appears. That will create a pop-up window where you’ll be able to resize the image quickly. You can also resize an image by clicking on it and dragging the edges, just like you’ll do in a word processor. http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-settings/#within-posts

Thanks for the information about pixel width.
I can easily use 600 instead of 1000 wide.
But do me a favor. Look at the basic blog:
    http://markspitzerdesigns.wordpress.com/
The top post is a test which shows how the photos are displaying.
I didn’t know I had to size them as I installed them.
Now look at the second post immediately below.
These photos were inserted directly from my computer.
They’re 1000p wide and fully fill the 585p frame.
I did not have to size them as they were inserted.
Will sizing the photos give me this same result ?

    And an unrelated question.
The “edit post” option seems to have disappeared.
I’m wondering if the software no longer recognizes me as the author of the blog.

  • Will sizing the photos give me this same result ?

Any photo larger than 585 pixels will display at 585 pixels if you set it to large or full-size. You’ll only notice the difference if you click on the photos to view the file itself. Smaller images, obviously, will not.

I did not have to size them as they were inserted.

As I tried to explain above: new images will always insert at the size setting of the previous image inserted. At some point you must have inserted a smaller image, which changed the default. It could also be because of the changes to the New Post button in the Reader that the default changed.

As to your second question: which “edit post” option? The one you normally see on the blog itself? Or on the All Posts screen?

If you are admin of the blog you should be able to edit any post, whether you’re the author or not. The only time you won’t see that link is if you’re viewing the blog while logged out of your account.

    Thanks
I think that with your help I’m getting things to fall into place.
It does appear that the software change has eliminated the method of creating a new post that I was using. But now that I understand the sizing mechanics better, I can work with that.

The edit post option shows up if I log in first.
Previously I didn’t need to – the software recognized me I guess.
I can work with that as well.

    Appreciate your help
