    Hi there,

You wouldn’t be able to add gm-block-bots to your WordPress.com site, but you can mark these referrers as spam using the support guide below:

    Jetpack Stats

Let me know if you have any questions with this!

I’ve done exactly as you said in the past and again just now – nothing happens. The “buttonsforwebsites.com” referral is what I’m trying to get rid of.

From what I’m reading on the forums this buttons-for-websites (which appears daily in the referral) might be the reason I’m getting a deluge of “subscribers that are not legitimate”.

I’m not currently seeing it under your Referrers. As for getting illegitimate subscribers because of it, shouldn’t be the result of a referrer. If you have a public site, this is always a possibility no matter how hard we try to stop it. One of the best ways would be to set your site to private so you can control who sees and views your site. You can do that using this support guide:

    Privacy Settings

I just checked and “buttons-for-websites” is still there on my screen under referrers on the stats page? It’s there everyday even tho I’ve marked it “spam”. (In the forums this seems to be widespread)

As I understand it if I set my site to “private” no one can subscribe at will. Is there a setting where I can approve or decline subscribers without them having to have a password?

Your staff has assured me that the “spam-subscribers” can’t jeopardize the blog BUT it has totally skewed my subscriber count and more and more are appearing daily.

Can you show me where you are seeing this here?

This would be possible if you set it to private. Note that when you have a public site, whether or not they subscribe they can see your site which is why it wouldn’t make a difference if you blocked a subscriber.

    Here’s a cut ‘n paste:

    Referrer Views
    Search Engines 10
    Facebook 6
    buttons-for-website.com 1
    WordPress Dashboard 1

I am not completely understanding how the “private” setting works for people who want to subscribe even tho I’ve been reading the support info.

If my blog is PRIVATE then every time someone wants to read a post they have to log into WordPress?

I don’t care who sees my site – I’m just concerned (and annoyed) by all the bogus subscribers that are increasing. I don’t know what their motive/purpose is. (The WordPress staff assured me they couldn’t hack or bug my blog)

Ok so just hover over buttons-for-website and you will see the word Spam? next to it. Hit that and it won’t show up anymore.

Nope – if they are followers on a private site they can receive your post notifications via email.

I honestly can’t speak for their motive or purpose, but it’s fairly harmless. I usually just ignore it. If it really bothers you, I’d recommend setting your site to private as we can’t control who views and subscribes to your site when it’s public.
