How do I install plugins?
-
Hi. How can I install plugins with WordPress.com? I don’t see the option for Plugins in the left hand side.
Thanks for any pointers.
-
Plugins cannot be used at wordpress.COM for security reasons. Plugins are for self-hosted wordpress sites using the software from wordpress.ORG.
The difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org (self-hosted) sites.

Just to clarify, I am checking if the paid version (“Pro”) allows me plugins as it allows me proper theming. If it doesn’t, then it’s hardly very “Pro” is it. Anyway, hope someone can share a positive answer.

Thanks thesacredpath. Got my answer. The “VIP program” gives what really should be basic pro features, at a fascinating $3,750 / month. Lovely. I’m sure there are suckers in the world. For that price you could setup an entire server farm of topline dedicated hosting in like 50 countries. Whatever…clearly not a solution for any serious user beyond simpletons requiring a basic blog.

No it does not. The pro version gives you your own domain name (along with some other upgrades) but the same restrictions and rules, as far as advertising, plugins, etc., still apply.
To use plugins you would have to self-host your own wordpress installation on a third-party hosting service such as godaddy, bluehost, etc., using the software from wordpress.ORG. Figure an average cost per month, all things considered, of $10 to $25.
If you tell us what you are wanting to do, there may be some work arounds that have been found.

Hello thesacredpath,
i would like to know if there is a workaround for social like buttons in posts and the facebook plug in considering the wordpress.com version ? Or is this only possible in the selfhosted versions ?
Thank you ! -
Go to settings > sharing and that is built in here at wordpress.com. See this support page on how to set it all up.
-
You can also set things up so that your posts are automatically posted to your tot FB if you wish.

OK, so I am on a wordpress.com blog, and understand i can’t install plugins based on this thread, thank you. Barring a plugin, is there a way to create/add an xml sitemap to my blog for better search engine visibility? I have the file created, just don’t know how to best add it. Thank you.
-
You automatically have a sitemap here, so you do not have to worry about that. The moment you created your blog here, the sitemap was created for you and is kept up to date in real time. WordPress also makes “firehose” push notifications available to all the search engines if they wish to use it, and some of the larger ones do.
Your sitemap for the site linked to your username would be: http://billhewsondotcom.wordpress.com/sitemap.xml

@billhewson
WordPress.com already provides site maps to search engines for us – we do nothing. http://en.support.wordpress.com/sitemaps/
On the bottom of your Admin page you will find a link to the Learn WordPress.com blogging Tutorial prepared by Staff. http://learn.wordpress.com/
The support documentation is all found at the Support link and the searcbox works very well http://en.support.wordpress.com which is also on the bottom of your Admin page.

thesacredpath – I’ve followed all the instructions on your link to be able to publicize on facebook and linked in. My posts show up in linked in, but not on facebook. What am I missing?
I do type my posts in a third party software (MS Word Blog Template) load them to WordPress as a draft, then publish them according to a schedule. Could that be why they never post to facebook?
thanks,
mikki
