How do I italicise text in an excerpt

When I paste text from my post into the excerpt field I lose italics – is there any way around this?

When you’re using a custom excerpt you can still add italics, but you’ll need to use html tags. The ’em’ tag will create italics:
Alternatively, you may find it easier to switch to the Text Editor, select and copy all the text you want to include, and then paste it into the Excerpt. If you added Italics in the visual editor, the ’em’ tags will already be present for those elements in the Text Editor.
A final option, you could choose to use the More tag when appropriate, instead of a custom excerpt:

This will include any italics present above the More tag in your visual editor.
