How do I keep my domain when switching between WordPress.com and .org?
-
See title. I messed up and registered my domain under WordPress.com and now I want to switch to WordPress.org because I purchased a custom theme and would really like to use it. Can I keep the same domain when switching to WordPress.org?

You are welcome to keep your domain with us and update the nameservers to point to another hosting provider by following this guide:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#update-nameserversAfter 60 days from the date of purchase, renewal, or nameserver change, you may also transfer your domain to another registrar.

I’m going to need more help. I’ve decided to cancell the domain anyway.
Now I’d like to start over again using WordPress.org. However, I have no idea where to begin. I’ve bought the template and downloaded the latest version of WordPress. Now what do I do? How do I install my theme?

If you’re having problems with a site not hosted with WordPress.com, we may not be able to help. To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities.
You can find support for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress here and here.

I meant: Is it possible to host a WordPress blog/site with a purchased custom theme on WordPress.com? If not, I guess I have to host it somewhere else? If so, how do I edit and post new posts if my WordPress blog is hosted outside of WordPress.com?
-
WordPress.com is just a blogging service. If you go self-hosted, you’ll be using the WordPress.org software instead of WordPress.com.

I know, I know. But I don’t understand how this works. How do I install the software? I upload the latest version from WordPress.org to my self selected host and then I can basically use an interface such as seen on WordPress.com? I’m not sure I get this.

If you’re interested, we do offer an upgrade called Guided Transfer (available in the Store section of your blog’s Dashboard) where we take care of everything for you: http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
Otherwise, you’ll need to install WordPress from http://wordpress.org/ on a hosting provider. We have some recommendations at http://get.wp.com/hosting/
Then, direct your domain to your hosting provider by changing your nameservers: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#update-nameservers
Once that’s done, you can move your content following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities.

Thanks! That should do it. If I’ll run into trouble regardless, I’ll post about it. Again, thanks.
