How do I keep my site invisible to the public whilst I finish it? Under Privacy settings the only option appearing is search engine listing (or not).

Under Dashboard>Settings>”Privacy” if you are the Admin on the site you should also see the option for “I would like my blog to be visible only to users I choose.” Is that not available?

No, all I get is this:
“Allow search engines to index this site.
Ask search engines not to index this site”I remember coming across what you mention, but now can’t find it again. And WP runs sooooo slowly for me – on my brand new pc. Anyway, I would really like the freedom of knowing I am ‘off the ether’ whilst being creative and playing around… Thanks

The site you’ve linked to above is not hosted on WordPress.com; it’s a self-hosted site using the WordPress software. You will have to seek help at the correct support forum, which is http://wordpress.org/support/
