How do I know if this is spam?
-
I just got a comment which Akismet has automatically classified as spam. It reads:
I recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog.
Tim Ramsey
The commenter has a website called mydebtreliefblog.com. I’m just wondering how it’s possible to tell if it really is spam, and how (roughly) does Akismet work out what is and isn’t spam. Because that comment doesn’t seem particularly spammy. However I googled his website and found that he has left the exact same comment on several blogs. Is that a sign that it’s spam?
Thanks in advance!

Well..spam is like weeds. If you don’t like it, it is spam, if you do like it, it is an ornamental shrub.
That sounds like either a genuine comment or a sly way of spamming. It seems to be a real person, but if in doubt, you have two choices –
1. accept the comment, and if the same guy keeps doing it/gets annoying, classify as spam.
2. ditch it into your spam folder and think sunny thoughts. -
I don’t know how Akismet works, but leaving a non-descript comment like that is the 1st tell-tale sign. Leaving the same in many blogs is a big red flag. I seldom check my Akismet to see if anything has mistakenly been marked as spam. I found anything so far.

If you are ever not sure, edit the comment.
Remove the URL they leave, remove any links in posts.
That way you get the comment but you don’t help the spammers. -
