How do I link an image in a gallery widget to a specific page?
-
With a gallery widget using “square tiles” option, I want the click on each picture in the widget to jump to a specific Page setup for the subject of that picture. So if there are 6 pictures in gallery widget, each picture is to be matched to one of 6 Pages.
I know this is somehow related to the use of the “attachment page” option when images are loaded into the image library. I’ve not found a good explanation of the “attachment page” concept yet. What is confusing is the “attachment page”, “media file” options appear when the the image is loaded into the library, when inserted into a page or post, when added to a gallery to be inserted into a page/post, and when an image is added to a gallery widget. It is hard to tell if that is the same attribute of the image appearing in different places or if there is a hierarchy to that setting.

Hi Mike!
There’s a bit of a difference between the Attachment Page and Media File although they can look similar when you visit them. Attachment Pages are pages of your blog that are automatically created when you upload an image or media file. On those pages, you can add a description of the upload as well as a title and some other attributes described here:
Here’s an example on a test blog:
Notice how it appears within my blog (same header, formatting, etc).
The Media File on the other hand just shows the uploaded image as demonstrated here:
Does that help to clarify the difference?
Per your original question regarding linking an image in a gallery to a specific URL, currently, it isn’t possible to define a clickable URL for specific images within a gallery. Clicking a gallery image within your post just opens up the gallery. Then, if you click the image, it will move the gallery to the next image. There’s also the option to click on “View Full Size” in the bottom right-hand corner and move to the Media File page.
Does that help to answer your question?

Yes, I think that does it. Thanks. What this means is that if I want to have multiple images appearing in my sidebar each supporting a click to jump to a Page in the blog, then I will need one image widget on the sidebar for each picture. Cheers!

Hey Mike!
That’s the best way to do it currently. The other way would be to use a Text widget as explained here:

However, the Text widget is definitely easier to setup!

Jeremey,
Another question related to image that has been a bit of mystery to me.On the Media Library page with the long list of uploaded images, there is an “Uploaded to” column. Many of my images are noted as “(Unattached)”, yet I’ve used them in galleries where the galleries are inserted into Posts and Pages. I have other images that have names of Posts and Pages under “Uploaded to” but these appear to be images added directly without a gallery. So is an image considered “(Unattached)” if not inserted directly into a Post or Page? Also, there is an “Attach” function under the “(Unattached)” label which pops up a dialog with a list of all the posts and pages. If I use that “Attach” functions, what happens?
The blog is irelandgolftour2015.com.
Cheers,

Hi Mike,
Regarding the “Uploaded to” column, when you upload an image straight into the Media Library (not straight into a post), it will be labeled as “Unattached”. This means that the image was not uploaded to a post as of yet. In practice, your “Unattached” images are not inserted directly into a post. When you either upload an image directly to a page or post or later add the image to the page or post from your Media Library, the title of that page or post will display under “Uploaded to”. If you later delete the image from the post and upload it to a new post, it will still display the original post title. Adding images to galleries does not add the title of the page/post to the “Uploaded to” column.
If you click “Attach” that will just associate the image with a particular post or page. It can help you to keep track of which photos are where. However, it will not automatically upload the photo into the post.
Does that help to clarify everything? Please let me know if you need anything else!
