How do I link my wordpress website with Google Plus?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to link my website, donweston.com with Google Plus so it will recognize it.

I am suppose to have the webmaster add the following code to   http://donweston.com/   (the code to add is:)    Google+

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Sure, I can walk you through this. The idea is Google wants a link to your Google+ profile somewhere on your home page to 1) verify the relationship and 2) help visitors find you on Google+.

It’s a good idea to have a list of links to your various social media profiles, so here is how I would approach this:

    1. Go to Appearance->Menu
    2. Click on Create a new menu (little text near the top)
    3. Name your menu something like “Social media” and click “Create Menu”
    4. Click on the Links item on the left and add https://plus.google.com/110042647879197030795 for the URL and “Google+” (or whatever you’d like) in the Link Text.
    5. Click Add to Menu. At this point, you’ll see the Google+ item on the menu to the right.
    6. Click the little down arrow next to the item on the menu to expand the options down.
    7. Find the option for “Link Relationship” and enter “publisher” (without quotes).
    8. If the Link Relationship field isn’t present, click on Screen Options near the upper-right of the page and check the box for the Link Relationship
    9. Click Save Menu

So now, you have a menu for your social media links. We just need to actually put the menu on your website somewhere! A fine place for it would be in your sidebar. Let’s do that.

    1. Go to Appearance->Widgets
    2. Click and drag the “Custom Menus” option on the left to the list of widgets in your sidebar on the right.
    3. Select the Social Media menu that we created above.
    4. Do that, then Google+ should be happy and your visitors will be able to connect to you in another way beyond WordPress.com easier.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if there is anything else we can do for you!

Well, this linked my wordpress page to my Google Plus Page, but didn’t help any with google verifying my wordpress page.

I should note that my original web address was donweston.wordpress.com and I paid the extra mapping and domain fee to change it to .com/

I am trying to activate authorship between the two pages–my Google plus and wordpress.

Thanks for taking the time to help.

  • Hi Don,

I went through Google’s documentation and there are two options. The “publisher” relationship is used to connect to Google+ Pages (e.g. company pages) while a different “author” relationship is used to connect to individual Google+ Profiles (e.g. your http://plus.google.com/me page).

Following through to your Google+ link, it looks like it might be the latter. Since you hung with me through the last long set of instructions, I made this change for you.

Can you attempt to reverify on Google+?

    Thanks!

Appreciate it, but google will not verify.

  • My hypothesis is that Google cached the page and if we try again later, it will verify.

Additionally, it looks like you’re trying to connect to Google Webmaster Tools. We have a special place to add the tag needed to do that. The instructions can be found here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/#google-webmaster-tools

i made a mistake. My donweston.com page was formerly noveltwo.wordpress.com (also the admin address). It is the one I am trying to sync with Google Plus.

    Don

  • Is there any change on your end? I can’t see anything on your site’s end that would prevent verification. Thanks for your patience!

No. I waited 24 hours and tried it yesterday. Signed off and tried it again on Webmaster Tools. I’m going to look at going to WordPress.org to start a page. I want more flexibility. Thanks for your assistance.

  • Thanks for your patience. As a note, Google Webmaster Tools uses a different verification system than Google Plus. Using Google Webmaster Tools’ HTML Tag option, you can add the verification info on the Tools menu of your Dashboard for WordPress.com: https://noveltwo.wordpress.com/wp-admin/tools.php

Have you contacted Google? I tried to verify a Google Plus page I manage on your website, which failed just like it has for you. Yet, I was able to verify a different WordPress.com site to the same Google Plus account on the first try without a problem.

I haven’t been able to verify that Google caches pages tested for Google+, but I have flushed the WordPress.com caches for your site and tested again, without success.

    Thanks again for your patience.

I got a google email from G+ and it said to paste a link into my web pages link and verify it. I saw this once before and thought it had to be done with wordpress. Seemed stupid, but I brought up my page, replaced donweston.com by pasting google’s link into it. Then went back to the email and hit the test button. It said it was verified and would be finalized sometime in the next week. That I could check it later and it should have a little green check (on webmaster tools I’m guessing).

The email said I could verify it in 2 easy steps. Seems too easy to work, but maybe it did.

  • Sounds good. Please let me know if it doesn’t work and we can continue to work on it. Thanks for using WordPress.com!
