    Hello there,
WordPress.com now allows us to insert our own text affiliate links within post and page content, as long as they are within the context of the post or page. These can link to Amazon or other third-party affiliate programs.

Image affiliate links, and any affiliate links in widget areas are still considered to be ads and are not allowed on WordPress.com. If you want to run ads on your blogs, see the WordAds program: http://wordads.co

Affiliate marketing blogs are not allowed. The main purpose of the blog cannot be driving traffic to other sites.

Affiliate marketing blogs: Blogs with the primary purpose of driving traffic to affiliate programs and get-rich-quick schemes (“Make six figures from home!!”, “20 easy steps to top profits!!”, etc). This includes multi-level marketing (MLM) blogs and pyramid schemes. To be clear, people writing their own original book, movie or game reviews and linking them to Amazon, or people linking to their own products on Etsy do NOT fall into this category. http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/

Seeing as my blog has no traffic it could not be used for advertising purposes.

It’s an ad. Ads are not allowed here. You cannot use the widget code because a) it is an ad and b) it contains insecure code. You can use a simple text link, affiliate or not. That is ALL the Amazon code you can use here.

There is no upgrade you can purchase from WordPress.com that changes anything stated here http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ of that. If you do require an ecommerce site, on site advertising, paid or sponsored content you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org

I think I solved everything except wrapping text around photos.

    I think you haven’t.

    Link popularity
    Social Media Marketing

ALL those links have to go or your blog will be suspended. What part of “ads are banned here” are you not getting?

  • Unknown's avatar

There is no such thing. I have not seen twitter feed either. They are usual on blogs. All you can do is link some social media sites.

Raincoaster, your advice is almost correct, the part about widgets, for example.

But you seem to be trying to drive home a point that any form of advertising is strictly forbidden. Not allowed in any form, or circumstance. Anything that even has a hint of advertising is strictly forbidden and will result in being banned. No form of advertising whatsoever is permitted, period.

Good grief, Raincoaster. That is simply not true.

“Most affiliate links for reputable merchants are welcome on WordPress.com. Feel free to post relevant affiliate links when blogging about books you’re reading, music you love, clothes that strike your fancy, gadgets you’re drooling over, or whatever is of interest to you and your readers.”

“We hope affiliate programs help you earn a financial reward for all the hard work you’ve invested in your blog. However, because we’re dedicated to keeping unwanted commercial messages from cluttering the WordPress.com experience, there are some restrictions in place that you should be aware of.”

    …and then outlines sensible restrictions.

No need to tell fellow members that zero advertising is allowed, ever. It’s misleading.

You wrote: “what part of “ads are banned here” are you not getting?

My response, with all due respect:

What part of “welcome” and “feel free” are YOU not getting?

Ads are not banned here. There are restrictions, but it’s unfortunate to oversimplify and say ads aren’t permitted. Even WordPress.com runs ads. And members do, too. I’m using Adsense. That IS Advertising. Those are ads. It is not only not banned, it’s supported by WordPress.com. And affiliate advertising, within restrictions, is also permitted, as described above.

  • Unknown's avatar

My advice is correct. Blogger-initiated ads are banned here. Amazon widget code is banned here. Adsense is banned here.

Hey neighbor. With respect, you plainly said (see above) “Ads are not allowed here.”

(Note: Correcting my earlier reference, on my blog, I use–not Adsense–WordAds.)

WordAds are…yes…ads. It’s advertising. It’s allowed, supported, promoted, by WordPress.com.

Those qualify as ads. Do they not?

Affiliate relationships are also supported, allowed, permitted, not banned.

Just suggesting a little more precision in dispensing advice, rather than saying “ads are banned here”.

Ads are not banned. Within the policy outlines and basic restrictions, ads are welcome, in the case of WordAds, facilitated, promoted, and supported at WordPress.com.

Hey neighbor, fuck you. Read for comprehension: you’re not a lawyer.

Hey neighbor, cheer the hell up, man! We’re both WordPress members. That’s what I meant.

There’s no reason to be abusive.

I understand you didn’t like having your advice contradicted. Saying “Ads are banned” is incorrect, incomplete, an invitation to be challenged, not because your intentions are bad, but because it’s false information.

Ads aren’t ‘banned’. I objected because you were overstating it. That’s all.

Unapproved ads include banner ads, widgets, etc.. What is and isn’t approved is not clear to some members (myself included, and you, too, which is why folks come here with questions) but approved ads are A-Okay. WordAds are an example (and may be the only example) of a fully approved advertising platform available to WordPress members.

The rest is just quibbling about the details.

And since you mentioned it, my co-editor is a lawyer. Ha. That was a lucky guess, no harm done.

Check out WordAds, they’re all over WordPress blogs.
