I want to filter portfolio by category, alphabetically and by search.I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

Hi there, there are a number of plugins that will let you filter and search. Have you checked out these?
https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/search+filter/There are also plugins designed for course management, and some of those may have built-in search features. Or, you could even have a plugin written to let you sort and filter things, and just use WordPress to manage the content and categories.
