How do I make a static home page?

    Hi, when I previously started to go through the WordPress registration process, it asked me what kind of site I wanted to make, and one option it gave me was to make one with a static home page, as opposed to the blog format where you have sequential, date-stamped posts.

    I never completed that process, and when I returned just now and registered, I was not given that option this time around.

    So please tell me, how do I make such a page? My goal is to have one main page containing an essay, and then have other pages that are linked to from various points in the essay. But I don’t want the typical blog format where you’re looking at the most recent post first and then going back in time as you’re scrolling down the page. If that makes sense.
