How do I make my backend URL the same as my domain URL

  • Unknown's avatar

I just bought a domain name, wordsbychristinehogg.com, but it’s linked to christinehoggdotcom.com, so the backend address is different to the domain address. I want both to be the same, but when I go to change blog name, it tells me I can’t because wordsbychristinehogg.wordpress.com already exists, but I am the one who registered it… I also tried deleting one of the blogs but it tells me I need to set it to private, yet when I do that the same message still appears and I can’t delete anything. I don’t want my blog name to be christinehoggdotcom.com I want it to be wordsbychristinehogg.com… Please help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I can help you out with that.

Just to make sure I understand, you want wordsbychristinehogg.com to point to wordsbychristinehogg.wordpress.com/, correct?

You will always work in the Back end URL (Dashboard) christinehoggdotcom.wordpress.com – never in the Dashboard of wordsbychristinehogg.com. – that is the way domain mapping works

Everyone that visits your blog will see wordsbychristinehogg.com. – but you will never see that as part of the Dashboard

Please don’t delete things – sooner or later in your drive to do something that can’t be done you will trash and delete your content forever

    Hey Rootjosh, yes that’s correct!

  • Okay, I’ve made that switch for you.

If your browser is still sending you to the wrong place, you may need to clear your cache.

Thanks soo much rootjosh! It’s working fine! Just one more thing, I think this is relatively easy… How do I change the blogname on the frontend to be ‘Christine Hogg’ and not ‘my blog’. Would I have to go ‘change blog address’? Won’t that change the whole URL again?

Ok, I actually just figured the answer out myself! Sorry, ignore that! Thanks again!

Ok, and now I’m trying to install a theme… but when I go to the themes tab, it doesn’t give me an option to install a theme. I can only choose from the ones that show up when I click on themes. How can I install a theme that I have on computer as a zip file?

  • Unknown's avatar

You do not have that option. You cannot install a theme on a WordPress.com blog. Get your money back. Those themes are for WordPress.ORG blogs.

It’s the same with plugins: allowing us to upload them would case a security issue for every other WordPress.com blog, as we share so much of the “guts” of our blogs here.

Wow. So many complications with something that’s supposed to be easy and simple.

Is it for free to change to wordpress.org?

  • Unknown's avatar

I see that you get a free domain when you change to wordpress.org with bluehost. I was completely unaware that wordpress.com is so limited. Can I get my money for my wordpress.com site to change to wordpress.org?

  • Domain registrations can be refunded within 48 hours.

However, in general, I advise against canceling a domain if you intend to use it again in the future. Canceling a domain can cause you to lose control of that domain and never regain it.

Instead, you can point the domain you registered at WordPress.com to another server (hosting service), with these steps:

    Change a Domain’s Name Servers

You’ll need to obtain the name server values from your new host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as “nameservers” or “NS records” instead.)

I hope this helps – let me know if you have any more questions!
