How do I make my blog private?

I am trying to set my blog to be private with access only available with a username and password. From all the documentation I can find online it states that this is done through settings –> Reading and editing your site visibility settings to private, however this option does not show up for me. The only option that shows up is “Discourage search engines…” I am unsure if this is because of the version of the theme I am using or if it is because of the version of WordPress which is completely up to date. Any insight anyone might have would be appreciated. :)

What is the URL of the blog you need help with? We need that to give you accurate help.
However it sounds like you are in the wrong forum and have a WordPress.ORG install and that would mean that you would need a Plug-in and also need to get help over at WordPress.ORG, http://wordpress.org/
