How do I make my feature photos show up in emails to subscribers?
-
Hello,
I follow several blogs, including my own. I have noticed that when I receive an email that I have published a post, the text of my post shows up in the email, but not the featured photo. However, when I am notified of other blogger’s posts, their photos are often included in the email I receive. Is this because I use the free version of wordpress or is there a way for me to have my photos appear in the emails as well?
Thanks! -
Hi there!
Your plan will not affect how the posts are displayed in the Reader. Are you adding Featured Images to your posts?
https://wordpress.com/support/featured-images/.
This would be the image that appears in the email.
If you’re not sure, please share a link to a post where the image was not displayed, and we’ll have a look. -
Hello, I’m sorry it has taken me so long to respond.
My question is not in regards to the reader, but I would like my featured photos to show up to my email subscribers. How do I make that happen?A link to a post is https://mamalava.wordpress.com/2021/03/19/anxiety-rochambeau/, in case you want to see the featured photo there.
When I receive email notifications of other posts by people to whom I subscribe, I see their featured photos.
But when I receive a notification for one of my posts (I subscribe to myself) there is no photo. I’d love to send you screen shots, but this forum will not allow it.
Thanks for your help!

Hi there,
To share a screenshot of what you are seeing, you can use https://snipboard.io/
Simply upload your screenshot on that web page, and then copy the link (created after you upload your screenshot) and paste it into your reply here so we can see it. Feel free to add as many screenshots to your reply as you think will help.
Specifically it will be helpful to see an email or two from sites you can follow, to see how images in that email appear. Please also include the URL to the websites in question so we can take a closer look at them as well, and determine how they are adding images (that you then see in your email)
Thanks for the additional info!

Hello! Great instructions, thank you!
Here is a screen shot of an email notice of a new post from my blog (which I follow) that does not have a featured photo: https://snipboard.io/G29PwR.jpg
Here is a link to a screenshot of an email notice of a new post from a blog that I follow that shows a featured photo: https://snipboard.io/TASifX.jpg. The URL for her blog is https://momsotherside.com/2021/03/19/what-are-the-things-that-youll-going-to-do-when-pandemic-ends/
Here is another one from a blog that I follow. This one doesn’t show a featured photo, but it does show just a ‘blurb’ and then directs the reader to his blog to read the rest. Is that a paid feature? Just curious. Trying to figure this all out!

Gotcha, thanks for clarifying.
I did a little digging into our email code, and I see that we do NOT include the featured image in subscriber emails. However, we DO show images that are directly inside the post (in the text area) itself.
The reason you see images on emails for https://momsotherside.com/ is because they are not using featured images, but instead are putting an image block in their post right after the title, but before they type anything. If they had set their images as featured images (instead of using the image block in the post) it would also show no images in the subscriber email.
In that event, you may wish to switch your publishing routine to add an image to the top of the post as this is what will show for subscribers instead of (or in addition to) setting a featured image.

Nope, this is available to free sites as well. Just choose the setting here: https://mamalava.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php
To explain, this will show only an “excerpt” in your RSS feed. Since email is also powered by RSS, this setting will also automatically cut your post after a certain number of words (55) and then display a continue reading link to your email subscribers.
This will not affect your site, which will still show the full post. Only email recipients will see the continue reading link and click it to go to your site where they can continue reading.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
