How do I make my site accessible (for those who don't have VPN) in China?

I need to make my WordPress site accessible in China, even for those who don’t have access to a VPN. Do I need to self-host, or will it also work if I upload my photos/videos to another site and link them to my WordPress site? I’d like to get clarification from WordPress staff before I make any changes or charges.

If visitors from China is a priority for your site, and having your readers rely on VPNs and Tor isn’t an option, moving your content to a self-hosted site is a most consistent way to keep it available.

The Chinese firewall doesn’t categorically block all sites running the WordPress software, or even everything on WordPress.com. But WordPress.com has been blocked very often.

Once you move your site, I’d recommend checking against this tester often:

Whenever WordPress.com is being blocked by China, nothing that’s on our servers will load for a visitor in China. So even if you just link to your WordPress.com site, once they click that link the page won’t load.
