How do I make sure the security certificate is correct?

When I log into my wordpress.com site from my work computer, it says it’s not recommended to continue because of issues with the security certificate. I have looked the issue up online and it suggests downloading a plugin. I have done this but I can’t see the plugin screen which it suggests… any help appreciated.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

    For what site is this?

I can assure you that the SSL certificate for https://punchlineuk.wordpress.com/ is valid and working as it should. It’s the same certificate that’s used for WordPress.com itself, and every site on WordPress.com using a free address.

What browser are you using? Do you still see the error if you use the same browser in incognito/private/safe mode? If not, it means the error might in fact be caused by malware in the browser – the fact that it prompts you to download a plugin makes me very suspicious as I don’t know of any browser that recommends that for SSL errors.

I’m experiencing similar issues. I haven’t made any changes to the site at all. But If people click on a link to my site this “your connection is not private” message appears.

It also says: “This server could not prove that it is http://www.lucianaslanguages.wordpress.com; its security certificate is from *.wordpress.com. This may be caused by a misconfiguration or an attacker intercepting your connection.”

If I type the address in the browser I can access the site normally. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

  • Hi there,

It looks like the problem is the “www”. Use your domain without that, and you won’t see any warnings.

We automatically remove the www from all sites on WordPress.com, so you don’t actually have to use it at all, but I’ve also reported this in case it’s something that needs to be fixed on our end.

  • Hi there,

Just following up. The problem is the “www”, and it’s supposed to give that warning if you include the “www” in your URL, but if you use the URL without that you shouldn’t see any warnings.

It is supposed to give that warning? That doesn’t make sense. It hasn’t happened before, and I clearly remember when I first set up my account it said it was not necessary to use the www but it would work anyway. I can avoid using www, but the problem isn’t that I can’t access my site, the problem is other people not being able to access it.

  • If I only type in http://www.lucianaslanguages.wordpress.com it works fine for me. The problem only occurs if I type https:// in front of it. That’s how it’s supposed to work.

Can you please confirm that typing only http://www.lucianaslanguages.wordpress.com works for you as well?
