How do I make the first large image in a square tiled gallery smaller?
-
I love the feature in the squared tiled gallery that makes the first image large if the total number of photos isn’t divisible by three. However, the image is too large… it doesn’t fit the screen vertically. Does anyone know if there is there a way to fix this? I’d like to keep one large image vs. adding more photos so they all display three across because I like the impact of the large image.
I’m using the Sketch theme. Thanks in advance!

Generally the size of the images in a Square tiled mosaic is determined by the content column and the number of images.
But you don’t have to include that image in the Gallery at all. It can be inserted on its own before you add the Square tiled mosaic Gallery.
Since your site is marked Private, I’ve tagged this for Staff input as well.

Thanks for the suggestion justjennifer! I considered this option but then it won’t be part of the carousel or bring users into the carousel with a click.
Thanks also for flagging for staff. I’m close to publishing publicly but hope to resolve this beforehand.
For staff, please refer to the first gallery: https://saylorawayaway.wordpress.com/portfolio/the-journey/
Thanks!

Hi timethief. I just have a basic free account for now. I’m considering upgrading to be able to customize the site further. Can you change the that display setting through CSS editing?

Sorry but I don’t have an answer and I would like to know that too. Staff will reply as soon as they can and then we will both know. :)

Pssst … just so you know it, when it comes to images justjennifer always has the down low.
But you don’t have to include that image in the Gallery at all. It can be inserted on its own before you add the Square tiled mosaic Gallery.
I think what she suggested is going to be your answer.

Hi @sayloraway, even with CSS, there’s no easy way to change the sizes of images in a tiled / mosaic gallery. The system uses some complex algorithms to figure out which image to put where and at what size in order to make them all fit together neatly. While you can technically make the image smaller with CSS, the rest of the space could not fill in automatically.
Also, adding the item before the gallery will not bring it up in that gallery’s carousel. Here’s what you might try instead though:
– Choose which photo should be the biggest, and use that one first
– Or, choose a different gallery style that suits your images better.
I hope that helps!

Since the OP marked this thread as resolved, I didn’t add another reply, but I will now.
It is possible to post even a single image using the Gallery feature, which will then open the image in the Photo Carousel if it is enabled. The only disadvantage is that this will be a separate Photo Carousel from the other images as it is a separate Gallery.
Just a tidbit for thought.

Because the Mosaic type Galleries want to fill up the width of the content container, if you have a single image in a Square Mosaic Gallery, it will do just that.
Here you go then, for the next 24 hours anyway.

When I click on the first large image, it appears in its own Photo Carousel separately from the next Gallery below it.
What are you seeing?

I’d thought the goal was to have them all in one carousel. If it is not, that’ll do the trick :)
