How do I make the images in my gallery link to separate pages?
-
I made a gallery on a page on my blog, but I really wanted each of the images displayed on the page to link to a further page on the blog so that I can elaborate on the image. How can I do this? Can it be done with the free wordpress membership? I hope so…
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It isn’t possible to specify links for gallery images. When you click on a gallery image, it will automatically open the carousel as shown here:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/#jp-carousel-37313
The only option here would be to manually insert the images (not into a gallery) and set a link for the images as described here:

Hi, thanks a lot, it’s working. But is there any way to insert the images onto the page manually but to make them look as if they are a gallery on the page? I thought I could win by uploading one image, aligning it to the left, then uploading the next, aligning it centrally, uploading the next, aligning it to the right, etc etc in several rows, but I tried to do that but it doesn’t display very well at all. How can I get the images in exactly the place that I want?

You can definitely do this. Here’s a quick example:
In that example, I aligned each of the images to the left (rather than left, center, right). You may need to adjust the image sizes just a bit to make sure they all fit on one line.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/beginning-html/#images-in-html
Give that alignment (all left) a try and let me know if you run into any trouble!

Hi,
I tried to align them all left like you said, but then they all just overlapped each other at the left…
Also, there aren’t many size options, which makes it hard to align images that are different sizes, such as portrait, landscape, rectangles, squares etc. It seems WordPress only lets you choose from ‘thumbnail’, ‘medium’, ‘large’ and ‘full size’, but it doesn’t give much room in between to alter sizes exactly or crop them etc… Unless I’m wrong? :-?
Also, I don’t really understand HTML very well, so I won’t be able to edit it from there..

Can you point me to the page/post in question so I can take a look?

When you’re editing a post or page, you can click on an image and drag the corners to resize. Here’s a quick demo:

We have an awesome beginner’s guide here!

Hey,
The page in question is: https://unitedfreakdom.wordpress.com/previous-works-2/
Just after I posted my previous comment I saw that an extra option is ‘custom size’, which somehow I’d consistently overlooked before! I also seemed to have overlooked the resize icons that appear at the corners of an image when you select it, thanks for letting me know.
Thanks for the beginner’s guide. It might take me a couple years to get round to looking at it but hey, I’ll get there in the end ;-)
Do you know of any way to crop all of the images on my page that I’ve linked above for you to see, so that all the images are squares? What I’d really like to do is make all the images into a circle and then they’d all be lined up nicely, which is something you can do with one of the presets in the gallery.
-
For cropping, you can do that once you’ve uploaded an image following the steps here:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-editing/#cropping
However, you won’t be able to crop them into a circular format. You would need to use a third-party image editor for this.
For the image arrangement, the different image sizes are going to cause a bit of trouble. It makes fitting the images together pretty difficult. I would recommend cropping them all to similar sizes first and then trying to align them.
-
Ahh, I forgot about using a third-party image editor! Good call, thanks :-) I will give it a try. Thanks a lot for your help so far.

Hi again! I used a ‘third-party’ editor (Photoshop) like you suggested to create the circular effect, but I’m still have problems with the alignment… I’ve aligned them all to the left like you said but they still all seem to want to overlap each other:
-
Oops, wrong link, sorry, this is the right one:

Images are looking good! I tested this out a bit on my side, and I was able to produce something similar to the desired outcome. Here’s what the finished product looked like:
To create that look, follow these steps:
1. Click on the first image on the page. You’ll see one of the alignment buttons light up like this:
Click that same alignment button to “uncheck” it. This will effectively give your images “no alignment”, which works out better than left aligning them all. Sorry for leading you astray!
2. After clicking on an image, use the resizing box in the corner of the image to resize the image to 200×200 or 250×250. Either will work. This limitation has to do with the EIghties theme. It’s not wide enough to fit 3 images side by side at 300×300 a piece.
Repeat these steps for each image. Give that a try and let me know what you think!
-
Haha, thank you :) I like the look, but is there any way to get the images to be four in a row (without making the size of the circles any smaller)? Or does it come down to the limitations of the ‘Eighties’ theme like you mentioned? I think the alignment you did looks nice, but I think it would look even better if the images could be 4 or 5 in a row instead of 3… Don’t know if that’s possible?
-
Actually, you know what, it looks all right:

I do have another question though if you don’t mind…. How do I set my homepage (the one with the blog posts displayed) to show the most recent blog post first? At the moment it’s showing the first post I ever made at the top of the page, and then subsequent ones go below that one… Also, is there any way to create a blog post archive on that same page, like at the left side, so people can click on a post and be taken to that one without having to scroll through them all?

This restriction is due to how the Eighties theme is styled. Currently, the max width on the page is 760 px. If you did four images across at 250×250, we would need to expand the width of the content area to at least 1000px. This is possible, but it would require the Premium bundle shown here (to use custom styling with the Custom Design portion of the bundle):
How do I set my homepage (the one with the blog posts displayed) to show the most recent blog post first?
If you visit your posts page here:
https://unitedfreakdom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=post
You’ll notice that the initial post is marked “Sticky.” In WordPress.com terms, sticky means “Always stick the post to the top”.
Hover over that post and click “Quick Edit.” From there, you should be able to make it “not sticky”!

Also, is there any way to create a blog post archive on that same page, like at the left side, so people can click on a post and be taken to that one without having to scroll through them all?
Sorry! Missed this one initially. The best option would be to use the Blog Archive widget either on the slide-out sidebar or in the footer:
-
Thanks, everything has worked out well (kinda). Only a couple of issues, not sure why they’re happening… Now that I’ve added the archive widget, when I scroll down the webpage has lost that 3D scrolling kind of effect where the main page creeps up as you scroll down but the header image moves slower and the site title fades as you go down.. (if you know what I mean?). But that effect seems only to be lost on the homepage (i.e. the main blog page), but on the other pages it seems fine..
The other thing as that also since I added the archive widget, now when you scroll down a footer appears saying the name of the website, the fact that it’s a WordPress site and what style theme it is, which wasn’t there before..Other than that everything has worked out good so far. I was expecting the archive widget to be displayed directly on the page on the left hand side but instead it’s under a separate menu on the right, which I decided is probably better and cooler ;) Anyway, thanks for your help :)
