How do I make WordPress include a photo with the hyperlink to a blog post?
-
When I post my current blog post in social media, even though I have photos in the blog post, no image appears beside the hyperlink. How can I change my post settings to be certain they include an image as well as link when sharing?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Not every theme has featured images; only some do.
We have no control over the images that Twitter, Facebook or any other social networks chooses to display or when they choose to flush their image caches. We really only send them the URL of the post, and they hunt through that for the excerpt and images to include.

That is interesting. Why does Facebook always show photos from other linked sites then? And why in this instance with my desireofyourheart.wordpress.com page, does it show a clear image, rather than no image?

It looks like you using an old retired theme that does not have featured images https://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/
What is the name of the theme you use, please?

You’re welcome. I do recommend switching to a newer theme. That’s because retired themes like yours do not support all features.

re: switching themes
Note that switching themes https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/#switch-themes can be easily done, provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the site. Themes are just “skins” on WordPress.COM hosted blogs. You can quickly and easily change themes on any WordPress.COM hosted blog to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do a lot of work is if you are changing to a dramatically different theme with different features and/or if you have done any CSS editing.
Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes, Browse themes until you find one you like and click the “activate” or the “preview” link, or type in the name of the theme you want to use when it appears.
The theme customizer https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/ provides a preview function for exactly that purpose ie. so you can view what a theme will appear like prior to changing one.

Thanks @timethief :) @welburn it looks like you’ve switched to the new Dara theme! Do you need more help?
-
Yes, I went with the Darla theme, but then had to change quite a few of the print colors so they would show up on the lighter backdrop. I think it worked though. I’m guessing there’s a MUCH easier way than manually changing colors, but that’s the way I did it. :)
The trouble is, though, that when I share it, even though it’s the new theme and has a featured image, it posts as a clear photo. And in this new style, the featured image gets covered by text, which isn’t great since it’s covering my daughter’s face.
-
The default colors for Dara should look like this:

So when you share a post on a social network, it will generally show a featured image.
Also, featured images can sometimes get cut off or covered — they become a part of the layout. So you might stick with images that look fine as backgrounds for now, and put any images with a subject in the post itself.
-
Yes, but no image posts with the link. It doesn’t look good, and that was what I was initially trying to trouble shoot. I guess it is what it is. Thanks for your help!
-
Ahhhh I understand now I think.
No image posts with the link _on social media_. Okay. Be sure you’re setting large enough featured images. If you still aren’t seeing an image on a social media post, send a link to that post and we’ll troubleshoot it for you.
-
Those are the colors I see, but I had colored fonts that complemented the previous theme, but were not visible on Darla, so had to be changed manually. If there was an automatic reformat the color button, that would have been so much easier.
Here is the link to the post that shows with a transparent image, even though there are images in the post. https://desireofyourheart.wordpress.com/2017/02/01/a-biblical-response-to-refugees-among-us
Thank you so much!

I’ve just been following this thread…and so I’m curious…can you send us a link to a Facebook page where you actually see the problem happening…where a “transparent image” appears instead of the image you want? Thanks.

@manfrommars I saw they were getting a transparent image (the one we see if there’s been an issue with the main image) but it looks like it’s been fixed since then.
@welburn you should see the image showing up properly on Facebook now.

Sorry it took a couple days for me to get back to you. I made the FB post from Feb. 3rd public. https://www.facebook.com/annette.welburn?fref=nf I just now reposted it on Twitter, and it’s still a clear image.
-
@welburn it looks like you removed the Facebook preview for that link. If you test-post it once more does it show up? You don’t need to publish again unless you want to.
I can’t see the tweets, so I can’t troubleshoot those, but my guess is that the clear image is cached there. I had to clear the cache on Facebook.
