How do I manage 700 comments?
-
http://nonduality.org/2008/11/28/adi-da-is-dead/#comments has nearly 700 comments and is still growing. Can the most recent comments appear at the top? Any suggestions for management without carrying the discussion to another online space? Moderation is tight. These are 700 meaty, lengthy comments. Thank you.

You can’t have the most recent comments at the top without changing the timestamp on every comment. And if you don’t want to close the comments there and continue them on another post, then just let them continue there.
I’m not sure what it is you want to accomplish.

You might want to add the Recent Comments widget to the sidebar to make it easier for people to see when new comments are added.

vivian, there are new comment options now.
nonduality, take a look at the Settings / Discussion tab of your dashboard. You’ll find options for splitting comments into pages (set it to 50 or something like that) and controlling the order of comments and comment pagination.

Me either. We’ve been waiting for the comment threading for ages. Please say this means it’s coming soon!

Weird. That code is disabled and available only to site administrators – we do that sometimes when a feature causes problems on WordPress.com and needs more work. I assumed that wasn’t the case though because it’s in the support docs.
I’ll see if I can find out what’s happening with it and report back.

The issue is with themes – all 60-ish themes need to be updated to work with comment pagination and threading before we can enable that feature. It’s in progress, coming soon.

Maybe it would be worth taking that section out of the support pages for the time being? Could cause lots of confusion (not least among WP staff). ;)

Please don’t do anything to mess up existing comment threads, like automatically splitting them after 50 or so comments. My Mummified Fairy Post would die if you did that!

I thought that we had a Sunday evening surprise :( Tellyworth – what you found out was what we had been told before (that the themes needed updating). I agree with rosclarke – the support section shouldn’t have that in there until the feature is enabled.
And now I’m off to check out rain’s Mummified Fairy Post :)

If you haven’t seen it, you’re the last person on Earth. That thing’s been in my top three posts all week, and I still haven’t broken 1400 on it!
