How do I migrate my WordPress site to the domain name my website designer transferred to me?
-
I have a wordpress site built by a friend. Originally, he owned the domain name and hosting. He transferred ownership of the domain name to me. I paid for the transfer on GoDaddy. I also bought WordPress site building on GoDaddy. The WordPress set up asked me if I want to migrate my wordpress site, but I can’t figure out how to do that because it asks for IP address and FTP info from the original host. (??) Unfortunately when I try to create a NEW site with my domain, it won’t let me build one, probably because my old site exists on wordpress, even though the domain is parked because I transferred ownership. Any suggestions for migrating my existing site or starting new?

@gracegordonofficial – What is the URL of the WordPressdotcom site you need help with, starting with https:// to make it clickable?

@justjennifer – My website is http://www.gracegordonofficial.com. I would be grateful for any advice!

It seems then that you are referring to a site that is using the standalone WP software. If so, then you’ve posted in the wrong forums.
Help for self-hosted sites using the standalone WP software can be found over at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page and at https://wordpress.org/support/ If you don’t have a username on the ORG forums, you can register one on that page.
Standalone WP and WordPressdotcom are separate entities; more information about the differences can be found here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

I believe I have the same question. I don’t believe it’s a wordpess.org question.
I have a wordpress blog with wordpress.com. I am trying to migrate to a managed wordpress account through GoDaddy with a new URL (that I bought through GoDaddy) and that will only then (after migration) become a wordpress.org site.
In order for the migration to work from a wordpress.com site GoDaddy is asking for “hosted location or IP Address” and “FTP username and password”. I use the web interface to manage my wordpress.com site, therefore I don’t have an FTP upload.
I am stumped, too on what to do. Any constructive help is greatly appreciated. -
@tatjanaruns – WordPressdotcom users do not have access to FTP or IP for their sites in order to migrate content.
Here’s how you export the content of your WordPressdotcom site in order to import it somewhere else: https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/
Questions about importing the resulting XML file should be directed to the WordPress.ORG forums.
Best wishes.
