how do I monetize a blog?

I write political commentary with currently 450 followers on Facebook. I want to shift to a WordPress site and I want to figure out how modestly to monetize this. Can someone give me some guidance.

No blogger initiated advertising is allowed on WordPress.com blogs. The only blogs that can be equipped for ecommerce are those with the $299. per year business upgrade. http://en.support.wordpress.com/ecommerce/
The only advertising program at WordPress.com is called WordAds and it’s for blogs on their own domains.

There are no restrictions if you setup a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities.Please see this guide to learn about the differences.
