How do I move 100 among 300 posts from categoryA to categoryB

How do I move 100 out of 300 posts from categoryA to categoryB?

The missing feature is mass-untagging. With mass-untagging, I would select the 100 posts, tag them with categoryB, then untag them with categoryA, en masse.

Right now, I have to the last step by hand, untagging categoryA from each of 100 posts .

  • Hi there!

    I’m happy to help.

This can be done using the Bulk Edit feature of WordPress in wp-admin dashboard. You can get to this dashboard by adding /wp-admin to the end of your site’s URL (e.g.: example.wordpress.com/wp-admin)

Go to Posts->Categories in the left sidebar on the Dashboard. You’ll be able to see all the categories for your website here. There is a number in front of the categories. Clicking on that number will take you to a listing of all of the posts that have been categorized using that category.

Now select multiple posts to Bulk Edit as mentioned here- https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/#bulk-edit

On the Bulk Edit screen if you want to see all the posts at once-
Click the “Screen Options” tab in the top right corner (top of the page), then change “Number of items per page:” to 100. Hit apply.

Update the category from this screen. Using this method I am able to add the additional category but not remove it.

To remove the old category from all posts, you can just delete that category from
    Posts->Category.

Hope this helps and let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks but didn’t address the key issue I stressed in my original question — “move 100 out of 300 posts from categoryA”.

I don’t want to touch the remaining 200 posts in categoryA.

You wrote …. “To remove the old category from all posts, you can just delete that category from Posts->Category.” … would affect those 200 posts. It would wipe out categoryA from those 200 posts.

As I stressed repeatedly, the key question is — How do I mass-untag categoryA from the 100 moved posts?

  • Ok. Got it. I indeed missed the important detail.

Unfortunately, as removing multiple posts from categories is not something that many people have a use for (according to experts), that’s not part of the WordPress core.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion (and also sharing the rationale).

For now, I just have to take on the leg work to untag post by post. I seem to get into this situation once a few months. I rely on category and tag for organizing 6000 posts.

  • I agree many of us need to remove categories from the post from time to time and it will benefit to have this feature.

But for now, you can make use of Quick Edit feature of WordPress to edit the categories.
