How do I move a site name to my own server?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a web site with FatCow and it came with a WordPress blog. I used that blog to test some pages. The Fatcow site will soon expire and I want to host the wordpress site myself – How do I move the site name to my own server?

I don’t care about the content etc. but I do want to re-use the name as I have that domain.

    Thanks
    David

Hi, it sounds like you’d like to setup a self-hosted WordPress.org site (one that isn’t hosted by FatCow or WordPress.com). Is that correct?

If so, the first step would be to choose a hosting provider for the new site. If you’re unsure of who to pick, we recommend a few at http://get.wp.com/hosting/.

Once you’ve picked the new host, they’ll be able to help you setup the site and use your domain with it.

If instead you want to setup the new site with WordPress.com, you can follow the instructions in this article to create a new site using your existing domain name:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain

If you’re unsure of the differences between WordPress.org and WordPress.com, the following article should help clear things up: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any questions or run into any problems.

    I’m glad it did :)

Please let me know if there’s anything else I can help with in the future.
