How do I move likes and sharing buttons in the 2012 theme front page template?

I would like to leave the like and sharing buttons on in the front page of my 2012 theme, but they interfere with the visibility of the first and second front page widget areas. I have custom CSS activated on the site. How can I push the like and sharing buttons down to the bottom of the page, below the first and second front page widgets?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there – I’d be glad to help with this. I don’t see any like or sharing buttons on the homepage, but once you’ve activated with them, just let me know and I’ll have a look.

Oh, ok. I’d left them disabled until I was able to move them. They are enabled now. Thanks!

  • Thanks for activating them.

It’s not actually possible to move the buttons away from the post content and completely underneath the footer widgets, because sharing buttons go directly below the content of each post.

What did you mean by “interfering” earlier? If the buttons are overlapping with the footer widgets in some way, would you mind taking a screenshot so I can have a look? Here’s a guide on how to make a screenshot, if you’re not sure: http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

You can upload the screenshot in your Media Library so I can see it. Thanks.

Please let me know when you’ll be able to help me with this, as I am preparing the site for an initial “launch” and will turn off the like and sharing buttons if I am not able to move them by tomorrow evening.

I am also happy to follow instructions as to how to move them (or insert CSS code, if this will help) even when they are turned off. I just don’t want them to come between the main page content and the bottom widgets – as it is more important to me that people notice the bottom widgets than share the homepage via social media. But I would prefer to have both.

    Thanks

Oh, jeez – I didn’t see you had already responded. So sorry!

Given that I cannot move them below the widgets, I’ll just turn them back off. No, they are not interfering in a technical sense. It’s just not obvious that if you scroll past these buttons there is more content underneath them – my guess is that many visitors simply would not notice the bottom widgets. Because the content in the bottom widgets is significant to the home page, I feel the placement of the buttons between the “post” and the “widgets” interferes with the prominence of the widgets.

In my opinion, the theme would be stronger if the buttons were placed below everything – I noticed they are turned off in the 2012 demo, and my guess is it is for just this reason. In the demo, the experience is of an initial one column site with a large photo, then two columns directly underneath. The buttons “interfere” with this look.

Thanks for getting back to me.

  • The sharing buttons are turned off on all theme demos because there is no “real” content on the site and so sharing isn’t encouraged there. ;-)

Well, that makes sense! Thanks for your help.
