How do I move my self-hosted WordPress.org blog back to WordPress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,
I started my blog Gone Banannas on WordPress.com about two years ago. About one year ago, my blog became a WordPress.org blog when I self-hosted via Host Gator. I no longer need to be self-hosted as I don’t require the amount of flexibility that that offers.

Is there a way to going back to be hosted by WordPress?

    Thank you so much!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Do these steps apply even if I had a WordPress.com blog previously? For instance, in the Moving from WordPress.org section, the first step is registering a WordPress.com blog – can I not go back to the one I had previously registered? Thanks!

  • You absolutely can go back to your original one. Steps 2 and 3 are the more important ones for you.

Okay, so I followed the steps and I got an email confirmation saying that the import was successful.

When I go to ‘manage my sites’ on wordpress.com and over to “My Upgrades” it says for gonebanannasdotcom.wordpress.com “Domain is not pointing to WordPress.com” Any insight into what that means would be super helpful.

Also, when I moved to a self-hosted site, it created a whole new wordpress dashboard, is there a way to combine the two? I just want to make sure I am posting from the right place.

    Thank you!

  • I’ve got that fixed for you. The nameservers just needed to be updated to point to WordPress.com again.

It can take 24-48 hours for domain/DNS changes to propagate throughout the internet. It typically happens faster than that, but it really depends on your ISPs update frequency. If you are still not seeing the correct site appear after 48 hours has elapsed, please contact me again.

Also, do let me know if you have further questions or if anything is unclear.

Hi there, I am a little confused. I thought we went through the process of moving my blog back to be hosted on wordpress.com so that this wouldn’t happen when you went to view it – but if you go to view gonebanannas.com it takes you to a Hostgator suspended page. Am I missing something? Thanks!

  • So, you’ll need to log into your domain registrar’s control panel and set the domain’s nameservers to point to WordPress.com again. According to WHOIS, your registrar is LaunchPad.com:

You will need to update the name servers as below:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

For more information, please visit the help documentation provided by the registrar and our support page:

Let me know if you have any questions!

  • Oops, meant to drop the link to the WHOIS info in there as well:
