How do I perform a 301 redirect?

    I recently edited the slugs to my page URLs and Google has the old one cached, so people searching for me on a search engine are sent to a dead link and receive a 404 error. I’m hoping to speed up the process by installing a plugin that will allow me to perform a 301 redirect in an effort to help redirect search engines to the updated URL, I can’t seem to find any way of installing plugins from my dashboard. Otherwise, is there any way I can perform a 301 redirect without installing a plugin?

    Hi there,

    You are correct that plugins are not allowed at WordPress.com, so that would not be a workable solution unfortunately.

    In regards to redirects, have you moved your site to a different URL entirely, and are the article URLs the same? For example, have you gone from domain1.com to domain2.com, thus:

    http://domain1.com/article-about-fishing

    is now:

    http://domain2.com/article-about-fishing

    No, all I did was change the slug tags for the page URL. I haven’t moved to a new domain or changed my domain name. It wouldn’t hurt to say that I’m being impatient and that the cache would update automatically. I’ll keep trying over the next few days. If not, I’ll see if your links could help. Thank you for your time!

    Oh, I see! I’m sorry, I was making it much more complicated. My bad!

    OK, in that case everything is going to rely entirely on Google picking up that you have updated your pages. We don’t really have an internal redirect system that would work in such a case.

    What I would recommend is that if you haven’t already, you set your site up within Google’s Webmaster Tools:

    http://www.google.com/webmasters/

    With this, you can see when your site was last crawled, see what has been indexed, etc. This might help you make sure that everything is linked as it should be.
