How do I pimp my blog?

I’ve just arrived on word press and I’m still trying to work it out. How do you get a readership for your blog? I know that one way is to start reading and getting involved with other people’s blogs but are there any other ways that I don’t know about?

In short: there’s no substitute for patiently writing stuff that people want to read.
