How do I ping Technorati using WordPress?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am following the directions given on the Technorati site. I logged in, selected Option, selected Writing…so far so good. Then it tells me “the last option on the page is “Update Services”. I don’t see that and I’ve opened all the other sub-menu items as well: General, Reading, Discussion, etc. Suggestions?

The instructions you’re reading are for independently-hosted WordPress blogs, not ours here at WordPress.com.

All WordPress.com blogs automatically ping Technorati, via Pingomatic, every time you post. I use Pingoat.com as well, just for backup, but you don’t have to. If you’ve claimed your blog with Technorati that should be enough.

One time I wasn’t updated at Technorati for months. :O So now at the end of each day I ping at both http://technorati.com/ping and http://www.pingoat.com/

Up until yesterday I had no problem with technorati but since yesterday around 3:30 when I posted my main post for the day on Bobby Cutts, etc I checked technorati, I manually pinged them and it never updated.

Until yesterday most of my referrers “People clicked links from these pages to get to your blog” were technorati but the ones that was referred yesterday were days old. In fact the most recent post showing on tech was 1 day old. I finally found the pingoat info late last night and immediately it went through but strangely it showed the post as being posted 10 hours ago which was right time wise but it just never showed up on their site as the most recent.

Pingoat is very good but only allows 1 ping within so many hours so that eliminates if you happen to have a say “breaking news” type post that won’t work and if technorati doesn’t put it through you are sunk.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I currently have StumbleUpon, Clipmarks and del.icio.us on IE and Firefox and in addition to those I have Scribefire as well on Firefox only.

All suggestions would be appreciated. Sitting and pinging manually with no go is frustrating as H, especially when it is a post you really want out there.

Thanks for letting me vent :)

Geesh, I just checked and see that the post I posted early this morning at 3:30am Eastern/12:30 Pacific time has just shown up on technorati as being posted 8 hours ago. Go figure, totally confuzzled

Exactly how many hits do you get that emanate from Technorati searches? I’m guessing it isn’t many. If that’s true, then maybe choosing not to sweat the small stuff is a good idea. If not, then contacting Technorati is technically the way to go, although it’s not likely to be productive.

Hey there, over the past 3 days except for yesterday I was getting well over a 100 hits from technorati of course that was Bobby Cutts related posts. I’m sure that was a big contributor but what I couldn’t understand is that it was pinging and showing my recents posts within minutes as opposed to hours or a day. That is/was what I didn’t understand how it was doing it that quick then just stops taking forever toshow the latest post.

Obviously I’m not that familiar with everything and how it works. I was shocked as well as it threw me into the top blogs and top post for 3 days and that was when I began watching the blog stats to see how they were running and it seemed that technorati pushed me into those slots.

I guess just overall curiosity in understanding or not understand.

I don’t rely wholly on Pingomatic or Technorati. Every time I post I ping Pingoat.com as well, and they ping all the services. That way if either Pingomatic or Pingoat go down, the other still works.

Thanks alot timethief and raincoaster, I really appreciate your input. A lot of things are still very new to me and I now have the pingoat bookmarked but see they only let you ping within a time frame rather than say, each time you may post if you should happen to post more than one a day.

    I do appreciate your patience with me……will I ever learn….. lol :)

They let you ping once an hour, no more. That’s an anti spam measure and a sensible one.

  • Unknown's avatar

I also ping every post I make at pingoat.

  • Unknown's avatar

Wow, they wouldn’t let me I kept getting “Oopsie!
You cant ping the ‘same blog’ so often. Give pingoat some rest!”
Do you have to fill out the form every time or am I doing something wrong?

I just went there and just got the above message although I didn’t fill out the form above I clicked to refresh as I thought the form was to be filled out just the one time.

    Am I the dufas?

  • Unknown's avatar

And I’ve only used that site once which was last night?

  • Unknown's avatar

No, it’s the refreshing. And right now they have a big post that wants you to fill out the form for their new service. That takes up the whole window. But it’s really the ping page, you just have to scroll down to see it. If you see that message, just scroll down and you’ll see the usual “pinging blogrolling.com ping successful” or whatever.

Once you’ve bookmarked the page they tell you to, all you have to do is go to that page, you don’t need to do anything else.

I’ve been using them for a year now and that new form threw me at first too.

Ah ha, gotcha. Thanks so much !!!
It worked and I’ve bookmarked it
