How do I place categories into menus?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am using the layout ‘My Life’ because it allows up to three menus (which is how many I need) for my work blog. However, I do not know how to place categories into these menus.

Essentially what I want is for my main page to have a rough outline of what the blog is about and this never changes (if this is possible) and then for there to be the three menus at the side of the main page which you can click on and see all the work.

It is about the process of producing a project and so I want to be able to have Pre-production (with all the research, ideas etc.) that I had, production (with all the ‘making’ I did) and post-production (with all the cleaning up I did after the project had been made).

And I want each of these stages to be a separate menu, with categories and sub-categories within it so a person can navigate from the main page into the menu, then into a category (like practical or theoretical) then into a sub-category (like research or initial ideas or whatever). This seems like a pretty simple request for a program such as WordPress (and I have been told it is possible) I just don’t know how to do it and it’s driving me insane.

Any help would be appreciated – I want to know it is right, be able to navigate it like it wasn’t my account, and make sure it all works before I put all the work in because I don’t want to be in a situation where I have uploaded/posted all my work and it doesn’t work so I have to start again.

    Thanks

    Luke

    a) You publish the outline as a static page in Pages > Add New, then you go to Settings > reading and set your blog front to display that page.
    b) You add the appropriate categories to your posts, and you create a custom menu that will contain these categories. For details see this post of mine:

Thank you – I have made the new page but when I go into the settings tab and reading there is no option for the front page. All I get is how many blog pages/feeds to show at once, whether to have full text or summary, the scrolling options and messages for followers. Nothing about which page to set permanently as the front page.

    You’re welcome.
When you go to Settings > Reading, the topmost options should be these:

    Aren’t you seeing this?

No… literally the top options are blog pages show at most and syndication feeds show the most recent (both with a box to enter a number in) and nowhere under the settings tab (reading, writing or general) does it offer me the option to choose anything regarding my front page… weird

@lukeadamson91: you need to have at least one publicly published page in order for those options to be available under Settings -> Reading.

Currently, you only have one private page on your site. Add a publicly posted page, and you will have the options to select from.

Please note, your blog is already set to private, meaning nobody can see the content unless you give people specific access to your site. There’s no need to set posts or pages as private unless you want to be the only person to be able to view that page or post. Even if someone has access to your private site, they will never be able to see a privately published post/page. Here’s more information that might be useful if you have more questions regarding you privacy settings:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-visibility/

    I hope that helps! :)

Ah, that clears up that issue – thank you for that – I thought setting it all to private was a good idea until it was finished so that nobody can see the work in process while it’s all over the place. But I think I might make one or two things public and leave the rest private for now – just so I can make sure it all works.

    Cheers for the help!

You can keep your site private until you’re ready to launch – if you don’t invite anyone to view your blog, it won’t be visible to the internet. I can see it because I work here. :D

    Happy blogging!
