How do I populate my blogroll using Bloglines Blogroll Wizard?
-
Yes, but just putting that url into a text widget doesn’t put the series of links into her sidebar. It gives a link to the page of links.
-
I see what you mean.
I can’t get her bloglines to even load, it keeps saying…
The user name you are using to access this blogroll is incorrect. Be sure you use your Bloglines user name and not your email address. Click here to create or edit your user name. -
Bee, it’s two different blogrolls for (and from) two different users and blogs. That’s why the different id portion of the code. I was referring to the fact that the Bloglines wizard itself actually works as a way to populate a blogroll and show all of the individual links rather than just one single link.
I’m still guessing it has to do with the bad id because of the space. Notice how her id WoWWonderWoman is all one “word” and mine Annette Fix is two, with the space in between. That’s got to be the problem…
But it is something Bloglines will have to fix, unless I just use a different email addy and set up a whole new account (without the spaces in my user id) and start all over again collecting blog links. =/
That may actually take less time than what I’ve already spent trying to figure it out, query the forums, and by the time Bloglines support and webmaster reply to my emails.
Ugh. I need lunch. This is giving me a headache.
Thanks for the input. =)

BTW, I brought up your friends link to show that her page loads in a browser, but yours does not. I think you may need to check your user name.

Bee, I got that message too when I was trying to use my code.
I’ve tried so many different variations that I can’t even remember what all I’ve pasted where in the link widget, text widget, etc.
At the beginning, Jennifer recommended using an OPML file, but I don’t know if Bloglines can or does create it…
Bloglines does have a feature that allows the blogroll to be exported… I wonder if that creates that type of file…and if it does, if I can get it to work in my blogroll on WP.
The potential drawback I see is that if it’s not dynamic, I’d have to export-> download -> upload/paste every time I added new blogs. That certainly isn’t a time-saver!

Yes, but you are still missing my point that it’s not going to work here, just by putting that url into a text widget. You still need to find a way of getting all of those links into your sidebar.
-
Right. I found this link…apparently other users have chosen to go that route as well.
-
Bee, previously in this support/help thread I mentioned that my Bloglines user id has a space between the words “Annette” and “Fix” (my first and last name). I think that is where the code error originates.
Copied from above:
<< I’m still guessing it has to do with the bad id because of the space. Notice how her id WoWWonderWoman is all one “word” and mine Annette Fix is two, with the space in between. That’s got to be the problem… >>

ros, if it was available as rss it would be OK in the RSS widget…but you would be limited to 20 entries.
-
Yes, could be. I just fear that the OP is spending an enormous amount of time and stress on something that is never going to work.
-
-
Ros, Oh, I get what you’re saying.
Bee, I’ll try that and see if the export/upload works. Then I’ll test it to see if it’s dynamic (I hope).
Ugh. Why should this be such a federal project?!? I consider WP to be far superior to Blogger’s functionality, you’d think WP would have this all sewn up so it isn’t a problem…
-
Ok, back to report on the experiment. Exported the blogroll file from Bloglines was a success (it was an OPML file). Uploaded it to the WP blogroll. It worked and is on the page now (in the bottom position, using the Links widget). Went back to Bloglines and added another blog subscription. It is not dynamic, so I’d have to re-upload a new OPML whenever I added more subscriptions or just manually insert them into WP blogroll.
I can’t believe someone at WP hasn’t come up with a better way to do this. I mean, how hard can it be to add an aggregator/feed function to the WP blogroll?
-
Honestly, Annettefix (love the name by the way) I think that it’s a lot more complicated to do an aggregator, than one might think. But, since I’m not a programmer, I don’t know that for sure. Anyhow, I’m glad that you got your links and categories set exactly the way you wished. Because that’s what ya initially came here for, and I think all the volunteers, here, did an excellent job solving that. :)
-
@annettefix-Sadly, you’re right that you’d have to update the OPML file manually.
From my end, once I imported my OPML file from BlogRolling to my COM blog, I just updated my WP.COM links instead. It was easier because I now have them in categories too.
-
Ros, Bee, Diamond, Jen (and anyone else I overlooked)–thank you so much for all your help!
Diamond, yes, got the link categories where I wanted them. YAY! The name…well, it may be interesting and memorable now (and a play on the internet: A Net Fix), but growing up with that last name was difficult. I clocked a few kids when the teasing got too bad. ;-)
As for the Bloglines Wizard, I just found it easier to do searches for blogs of my Twitter friends and then add them to Bloglines. I’ve got two more tweeple pages to go through, then I’ll upload my final OPML file. After that, Jen, I think I’ll follow your lead and add blogs individually.
A big cyber hug and thank you all.
