How do I properly set up email at my domain if not bought through WordPress?

  • Unknown's avatar

I purchased my domain through Domain.com, but I can’t for the life of me get my email address setup to work. The message that I get on my Domain.com email setup is that “the email does not currently route here.” I have tried changing the MX and Nameservers, but nothing has worked. I’ve contacted Domain.com and they seem to think that it’s an issue on the WordPress side, not on their end. Has anyone had a similar issue, or better yet, does anyone know what I’m doing wrong and know how to fix it?

    Thank you!

  • Hi Sean – because your name servers are pointed here, you’ll have to enter the MX records on our end for your email to work.

Unfortunately, we don’t yet have sample DNS records for Domain.com, so can you please contact them once more? Please ask them for the full and exact MX, CNAME or other DNS records that you’ll need to enter here to make your email work while your name servers are pointed to WordPress.com.

Let me know what they give you, and I’m happy to make sure that they are properly entered on our end.

This is what Domain.com sent me:

These will be the MX records for your DNS on the wordpress site to point back to

    Priority Host Points To: Action
    30 * mx.crossriverpictures.net
    *

    10 @ mx.crossriverpictures.net

    – Does that make sense?

    Sorry, that got formatted strange.

Here is what they sent, written a bit more legibly:

    Priority: 30, Host: *, Points to: mx.crossriverpictures.net
    Priority: 10, Host: @, Points to: mx.crossriverpictures.net

  • Hi Sean – that makes sense. I’ve entered the following:

    MX 10 mx.crossriverpictures.net.

However, they’ve given you two different MX records that both point to the same domain.

I think what we also need here is an IP address for their mailserver, though, so we can set up an A record to point to it – can you please ask them for this? I can’t find it on their support site. Thanks!

Sure. They said this is the IP.

    66.96.142.50

They said that they have two other IP addresses, though the above is primary. The other addresses are the same, but the last two digits are .51 and .52 respectively.

  • Hi Sean – ok, can you give it a few hours and see if your mail starts working? If not, can you please contact them again and tell them this is exactly what I have entered, and ask them if there’s anything else I need to add:

    MX 10 mx.crossriverpictures.net.
    A mail 66.96.142.50

Sorry for the back-and-forth, but we’ll get this straightened out!

    Hi,

It still isn’t working. I’ll contact them now.

  • Hi Sean – thanks. I’ve sent you an email about this, too, so check your inbox.
