DO SO THAT I CAN REACH MY SITE RATHER THAN JUST MY BLOG. THANK YOU.

  • Howdy and welcome to WordPress.com!

You’ll need to update your primary domain to teacherrecertification.us in order for that to be the link shown in Google. To prevent you from being discredited in Google for having two websites with the same content, all secondary domains point to the primary in a way to tell Google that the primary is the “only site” with this content.

Otherwise, if Google thought both jaywissot.wordpress.com and teacherrecertification.us had the same content and were different sites, it would knock points off of both site’s rankings to discourage folks from having multiple sites with the same content.

Google will update to show the teacherrecertification.us address in due time after the next time they “crawl” your site.

Please let me know if you have any questions or id there is anything else we can do for you!

Thank you so much. I did change my primary domain to teacherrecertification.us initially. But when I didn’t see it being picked up on google I changed back to jaywissot.wordpress.com I guess I didn’t wait long enough for Google to notice it. I will make the change right now.
Thanks so much for your help.

I still am unable to reach my website when I google teacherecertification.us I am still directed to my blog instead. How long should it take for Google to direct traffic to my company’s website rather than to my personal blog’s address ? I am anxious to be able to manage my website; not my blog.

  • Hi Jay,

To back up a bit, you had mapped teacherrecertification.us to your blog jaywissot.wordpress.com. Is there a different website you would like it mapped to? I only show that one site on your account, but you can create another one using the “My Blogs” link at the top of http://wordpress.com if you’re wanting to start a new site with that address.

If I’m misunderstanding, my apologies and thanks for your patience.

No. I’m sure it’s my inability to explain what I need. I need to control/manage my website which is teacherrecertification.us. I want to be able to add and delete content on a periodic basis. I assumed I could do that through the blog jaywissot.wordpress.com I thought you could use the dashboard on your blog to manage your website. I am totally uninterested in the blog. I only care about the website. I hope this clarifies my confusion a bit. Apologies for making this more difficult than it probably is. I’ve never worked with WordPress before. Thank you again.

  • Howdy again,

I think we may be on the same page now.

A blog and a website are the same thing—a blog is a type of website. Through WordPress.com, you can manage multiple websites or blogs or any combination thereof.

Here are my suggestions for you, assuming you want to use what is currently teacherrecertification.us as a more traditional website rather than a blog:

    • Create a new page to serve as your “home page” by going to Pages->Add New in your Dashboard ( http://teacherrecertification.us/wp-admin ).
    • Once you’ve made your home page, go to your Settings->Reading page and change the first option to “A static page” and select the home page you just created. Now, when you visit teacherrecertification.us, it will display a static page instead of a running list of blog posts
    • Next, continue to add pages for the rest of your content
    • Lastly, visit Appearance->Menus and you can set which pages will appear on the menu on your site (more details on how to make a menu:
      Custom Menus

    .

We have a support page also with other tips and suggestions for building a website with WordPress.com: http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

Does that help get us on the same page? Thanks for your patience and for using WordPress.com!

Thank you, once again. You have been more than helpful. And I really do appreciate the generous amount of time you have given to me. One final question, please, before I begin to follow the instructions you gave to me. The content for the website in question, teacherecertication.us , has already been created and posted online for me by a web designer who I hired to provide that service. I don’t want to create content as much as I want to be able to access the site to remove and replace content dates and times on a periodic basis. The web designer used WordPress to create the new website design for me back in June of this year. Am I correct in assuming that what I want to accomplish can be achieved by following the instructions you gave me in your last e-mail ? Thank you for the umpteenth time.

  • Ah, now everything is falling into place a bit more.

There are two flavors of WordPress. WordPress.com, which is this site, where we do all of the hard work of running the site, keeping it secure, providing features, etc. There’s also WordPress.org, which is where you can freely take the core software behind WordPress.com and put it on any server you want and do whatever you want with it.

The vast vast majority of the time, a custom built site by a designer will be based on WordPress.org, which would be hosted elsewhere from WordPress.com.

Do you know where this created site is at right now? Usually, it would be uploaded to a hosting provider, such as BlueHost or GoDaddy or Hostgator—something like that. Assuming I’m on the right track, you’ll need to point your domain to that host (not WordPress.com) and would access you site from there.

The web designer should be able to help you make sure you have everything in the right place so you can view/edit your site. Could you ask them to give some advice as well?

Please let me know from here. If the site is actually on WordPress.com, but tied to someone else’s account, we can work together to fix that up. If it is actually elsewhere, I can point you in the right direction as well as refund the $13 for the domain mapping.

Thanks for your patience and for sticking with us throughout this process :-)

    Cheers!

The site teacherrecertification.us was originally set up to be hosted by Go Daddy. But in trying to hook up with WordPress.com I contacted Go Daddy and asked them to change my name servers. Do I need now to contact Go Daddy and ask them to help me change my name servers back to their original settings ?

  • HI,

Possibly. I can’t see the previous settings to check, but if your site is hosted on GoDaddy, then the nameserver settings would need to point to GoDaddy’s nameserver and indicate which server of GoDaddy’s your site is on.

Their support should have the access needed to get that directed back to where you need, assuming your site has been uploaded to GoDaddy. Please do note that the login for your site will be different than your WordPress.com account (as it is an independent system). The web designer should have login credentials for you if they have not already been sent to you.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or if there is anything else we can do for you.

    Cheers!

Okay. I went to Godaddy.com, my web host, and made the changes necessary for me to reach my website by Googling it. So that’s good. But now when I log into WordPress.com I am unable to get in. I am told I am submitting an invalid user name.
If you can kindly help me with that as well as telling me what I need to do to get the $13.00 refund You mentioned i will continue to be in your gratitude.
I am going to contact the web designer and see if he can give me the information necessary to manage the website from my end.
    Again, thanks much.

  • Howdy,

I’ve initiated the refund, so you should see it in your account in the next few days.

To log into WordPress.com, that login will be the same as before (when you visit http://wordpress.com ). For your teacherrecertification.us site ( http://teacherrecertification.us/wp-admin/ ), that login will be new and your designer should be able to pass that along to you.

Please let me know if you need anything else, but if not, it has been a pleasure working with you the past few days.
