The way to do that is with the Site Redirect upgrade:
Take a look through that page and let me know if you have any further questions. I’ll be happy to help.

Hey there,
Yeah I’ve been there but I can’t do it as I innocently closed down my devonshireteaadventures.wordpress.com site because I didn’t realise that it would have these implications….
-
also, I don’t need to do anything with my domain, or do I? I just thought the problem was with the wordpress address

If you have deleted your WordPress.com site, there is no way to redirect traffic to it to your new self-hosted WordPress site.
-
But my site has always been self hosted, nothing has changed there…I didn’t realise that by just changing my wordpress address it would screw everything up on google?

I am not sure that I understand. your original post asked about redirecting traffic between two WordPress.com sites. There was no mention of a self hosted site.

yeah that’s right, okay wrong term, I have used wordpress but have always had a domain name attached that’s hosted by another party.
So you’re saying, once I closed the first wordpress address although essentially they are one and the same, there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that something can be done when they get to the blurb about how devonshireteaadventures has closed down?
-
That is correct. Once a site is deleted, it is gone. If the site does not exist, Site Redirect cannot be set up.
-
mm, okay.
So how can you get your domain name showing in the url rather than the wordpress one? That’s what got me in this shitty situation in the first place :-)
-
To do that, log into your WordPress.com site’s dashboard, click on Store–>Domains, enter the domain you wish to use in the “add a domain” box and click the “add domain” button. Then simply follow the instructions that appear to register your domain (or map your domain if it is already registered elsewhere).
Let me know if you have any trouble.
