  How do I delete a person who has a role (author, etc.) from the system?

  You must be logged is as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard and remove an official user of the blog. Then see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#removing-users
