When you haven’t added any widgets yourself, each theme displays its default sidebar items (on sidebars that aren’t optional). So, to remove such items you go to Appearance > Widgets and add the widget(s) you prefer. To remove the searchbox on static pages, you drag widgets to “Primary Sidebar”. To remove the searchbox on the blog page, you open the “Blog Primary Sidebar” and drag widgets to it.

hi Justpi – thank you so much for your very clear answer – I’ve done this, I think – but the ‘search’ box is still on my homepage – please let me know anything else I can try – thanks very much – really want to get this sorted!
Emma.

I can assure you that if you had done what I suggested the searchbox would have gone. So, you’re welcome, but since the searchbox is still there then my reply wasn’t clear!
At the moment the sidebar on your blog page is displaying the Search widget only. The default on Stay would be Search, Archives and Meta, so what you’ve definitely done is you’ve added the Search widget to Blog Primary Sidebar.
The default on static pages is Search only, so there’s no way to tell if the searchbox I’m seeing is the default one or a manually added one. Go to Appearance > Widgets. The top right module (Primary Sidebar) should be open. Is it empty? If it’s empty, drag & drop any widget (other than the Search widget, naturally!) into the module. If it shows a Search widget, open the widget, click Delete, drag & drop any other widget.

Thanks again – getting clearer! I am now able to swop the search for a calender, but i would prefer not to have any widgets – I was hoping to have a whole page, as you see when you look at the example page of ‘stay’ – how do I set it so there are no widgets at all on this page, because that seems to look clearest – thanks again for your help.

Your original question was how to remove the widget, not how to get rid of the sidebar: not the same thing.
For a full-width page with no sidebar, you edit the page and select the Home template instead of the default template. -
Hi Juatpi –
thanks for your help today and sorry to disturb you again – when I try to remove side bar like this it seems to take the edit option away, which makes further changes difficult – is this right or is there another way to remove the side bar and have a full page blog?
Thanks again. -
You don’t need that Edit link: you manage your blog (including editing the pages in Pages > All Pages) via the blog dashboard:
http://106bnblondon.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
You should bookmark this and add it to the bookmarks bar of your browser. But anyway I’ll notify the WP theme team and let them know the Edit link is missing.

Thanks that is really helpful. can you let me know how to make the featured image a narrower band at the top of the page – similar to on the ‘stay’ theme sample page – my featured image seems to take up a very great depth at the top of the page – really appreciate your advice.

The theme displays images in their original proportions. If you want shorter images, you need to upload shorter images. You can use an image editing application or an online tool (including WP’s image editor in Media > Library) to crop your images to make them more oblong.
