How do I remove suspicious 'lurkers' at my site

  • Unknown's avatar

Sites from England are going to the same 3 pages of my blog every day ever since I posted the blogs. I am concerned because I think they may be trying to get information from visitors to my blog or trying to get info on me.

How do I have them stop doing that – or at least have them explain why they are lurking on my blog.

You don’t and you can’t. Public blogs are available to everyone who has internet access and none of has to explain why we are reading anything at all on any site, regardless of how many times we choose to read it. See here for security tips > http://en.support.wordpress.com/security/

This seems to be the ‘normal’ behaviour of a lot of people on the internet. In 8 years of blogging i have had this happen on every blog i have had. We can never understand why people do certain things, and i think sometimes it’s best to just not even question it, just ignore it, and carry on blogging.

I’m visually challenged and have so much trouble with focusing that I frequently return to posts to read them more than once. I suppose that makes me a suspicious lurker in some eyes. lol :D

LOL i’ve suspiciously lurked on your blog a few times timethief :)

While I can appreciate that there are many reasons why people would visit blogs and pages, this has been going on for months now. If there is anything I can count on when I see my stats, is the same 3 pages being viewed by several sites from England.

When do I wonder? At 30 visits, 60, 90? Or just ignore the possibility that if you visited, your info may be mined without your knowledge (or mine). I don’t like to have that concern over my head. Afterall, this is the internet.

Just ignore it. What do you imagine they can do? Ignore it, or it will drive you mad and spoil your blogging experience. In my experience they eventually move on, especially if they get no reaction. Never mention it in a blog post!!

And…No-one can get any of your information, although i’m not sure what information you are worried about. the only info available to people who view your blog is the info you provide. Suspicious views CAN make you paranoid, but how do you know they are not genuine views from many different people, after all the UK is quite large you know! And it could be different people with the same IP, or with a proxy IP. They may not even be in the UK, they could be disguising where they are from. See how it could go on if you worry about it? We can never really know anything about who views our blog, nor why. Just enjoy it, and let it go.

All I was asking for was how to stop someone with suspicious activity from coming to my site. I was not looking for opinions or reasons.

I am concerned it is a computerized thing.

If you can’t answer the question – I respectfully ask that you please don’t respond.

    @justkevinhere
If you think you content is being stolen you can use copyscape to determine if that’s happening http://copyscape.com/

  • Unknown's avatar

    That is not my concern.

Do you have any contribution to the solution to my question?

  • Unknown's avatar

    There is no “solution”.

    Best wishes with your blog.

Perhaps they wouldn’t lurk if they knew about your attitude!!

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m disappointed in your response.

If my attitude is negative, as you imply, then I guess you want me to be patient and participate in your conversation with another responder. (if you noticed the note below this window regarding “positive and productive discussions”.)

I would guess that you don’t have much patience for people who just wish to have their question answered – and instead indulge you.

Actually, never mind. I’ve wasted too much time with you already.

  • Unknown's avatar

I gave you plenty of answers. I tried to put your mind at rest after you had already been told there was nothing you could do. And it is you who responded negatively. If i have no patience then i wouldn’t have bothered answering you three times.

    Gentlemen,
I’m asking you please to both to walk way from this thread.

    Let’s start over.

Apparently some people from the UK are going to the same three pages in your site. These are not “lurkers” these are “readers.” They are not a problem and there is no security threat to you whatsoever from people simply reading your blog.

It could happen for a few reasons:

    1) a site in England may be hotlinking images from your site. To test, change the images in those three posts and see if they stop coming after a couple of days. If they do, it’s either this or 2) below.

    2) a search engine like google.co.uk could have indexed your images. Images on WordPress.com are very, very attractive to search engines and if the English version of a search engine has indexed your images and rated them highly for a search term, there’s your explanation. Again, to test do as above. But even if you restore the images, you won’t get your ranking back very quickly

    3) English blogs may have blogrolled you or linked to your posts, particularly if they are on the topics that those blogs discuss. We would need to see your Referrer stats to decide if this was the case or not.

In every case, there is no threat to you whatsoever. WordPress.com blogs are extremely secure. You are perhaps thinking those three sites might be attempting to do a DDoS attack or something…as someone who writes about Anonymous and hackers for a living now, allow me to assure you this is not only not the case, it is impossible.
