How do I remove the large white area above my cover image??

This is the website. As you can see, there is a large white area above. I use the free version of WordPress. Just getting started.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Because I have the free version, I don’t think I can add CSS code.

  • Hi there,

The only way to remove that is using custom CSS, and that requires at least the Premium Plan.

But that space is there for a reason. That’s where your site title and menu goes, and you haven’t added either of those to the site. You can see how those will appear on the theme demo site, here:

    https://maywooddemo.wordpress.com/

Go to My Site ->Design ->Customize ->Site Identity, and make sure to add a title to your site. You can opt not to display it on the site itself if you want, but it’s important that you still add one – that’s what will display in the browser tab if someone is looking at your site, and also the name under which search engines will index your site. If there’s no site title, it can cause problems with having search engines show your site in search results.

And while you only have one page right now, once you start adding more pages to your site you’ll need a way for people to find those. That’s what the site menu is for. You can see how to create a menu for your site here:

Thank you for a great and comprehensive answer. I agree that it should exist because of search engines, but I would rather hide it.

But the website I want to construct does not need one, as it will only be a simple blog where you can scroll down. (at least the menu noes not need to take up space at the top).

Unfortunately the white space ruins the look I am trying to create, and I can’t afford to pay for a whole year of Premium just to remove the white space there, I was thinking more of the Personal plan.

I am saddened (and bewildered) that this isn’t possible. But thanks anyway.

Is it possible to turn the whole section into an image then, so it looks more like this?

  • You could achieve something like that on a theme that supports a custom header image. Maywood doesn’t, but you can find a list of themes that do here:
