How do I renew my domain when wordpress thinks it is not expired?

I set up my wordpress blog with a domain a some years ago. I don’t remember how I registered the domain. But at the time all was well and my domain correctly pointed at my blog.

I let the whole thing languish for 2+ years. My domain expired (I was notified of this via a Google Apps domain expiration email…so maybe I had registered through them? I don’t think this matters since at this point nobody has the domain registered.) in February 2012.

    Current behavior of my blog:
    – I go to the domain I had previously registered and nothing is there. It’s expired and that’s what I expect.
    – I go to mydomainname.wordpress.com and it tries to redirect to mydomainname.com, which fails. That’s because mydomainname is set as primary domain within wordpress. OK.

Now I go here: https://wordpress.com/my-domains/. It shows that my domain name will expire on November 18, 2014, which is wrong. Huh. Poke around some more and end up here: https://wordpress.com/my-upgrades/. There’s a button to Renew Now, which is what I want so I click it. It shows a page with items: $13 for domain mapping, $5 for registration. Enter payment info, OK. I get an error message: “This blog is not subscribed to some of these products. Did you mean to purchase them?” Huh?

Anybody know how to fix this?

Is there a way to delete any knowledge of mydomainname.com from wordpress? It clearly doesn’t know what’s up with the domain. I believe that if I had a clean slate with respect to the domain name, that I’d be able to add the domain name just like new. But I can’t find a button that lets me do this.

  • Hi there. I’m going to tag this for staff to follow up. Please be aware that staff are on their annual company conference so you might not get a reply until after September 24 (https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/full-staff-support-will-return-september-24?replies=1), but perhaps another volunteer who can help you will respond earlier.

Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when someone responds and be patient while waiting.

Also, in the meantime if you go to Store ->My domains, try switching your primary domain back to the WordPress.com URL. That should prevent it from automatically redirecting to the custom domain.

  • Yes, if you received the expiration notice via Google Apps, your domain was registered with them, and you’ll need to contact them ASAP to recover it.

kelseyleighgreen.com is just mapped here, and I can of course remove that mapping upgrade if you still want me to.

OK. I see that I can delete the mapping myself. I will do that and then I think I will be good from there. Thank you!

  • You’re welcome!
