How do I request that people provide their email address to download a document from my site?

I would like to put two assessments in pdf format on my sidebar and would like to make them available only to people who provide their email address. How do I do that?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Helane!

There are a few ways you could go about this and the best one would depend on how you want to handle their email address once you’ve got it. The simplest thing to setup is probably to first create a page with a Contact Form:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/

Design that form to have readers enter their email address.

You can then setup a filter in your email to store those messages in a particular folder, and automatically respond with a message containing a download link to the document (or has the document attached.)

Here’s an example of that in GMail, but most email providers have similar functions:

    http://email.about.com/od/gmailtips/qt/et_filter_reply.htm

The only downside to this method is now that you have their email address, you’ll need to manually add it to your mailing lists/etc. But in terms of delivering a document automatically, this is what I’d set up. :)

    Best,

    -Alex G.
