How do I restore missing images in my posts?

Images seem to be going missing from my posts and media library. In the posts and media library, the images are replaced by a small cross in a black square. If you click on this icon, the image appears on its own on the page. Odder still (to me), if I switch between the list and grid views in the media library, then the images that are missing change.
I’ve read some of the Forum comments, but I can’t figure it out. I don’t have any plugins. I’ve tried switching to Twenty Eleven but this didn’t work. I couldn’t get Hotfix to install. I don’t want to do anything too technical as I’m concerned I’ll mess things up.

Can you let me know if this is still occurring on your side? I’m currently seeing all of the images when I load your media library.
Please let me know if you’re still seeing the missing images icon!

Thanks for taking a look. The missing images reappeared the next day – I’m not quite sure why though! (I cleared the browser cache, so perhaps that took a day to take effect?) So all now ok I hope.
