How Do I retrive an API key that is not on profile page
-
Hello,
A novice here.
I run a blog hosted by HOST MY SITE :
I have no API key or cannot find it. I did the whole profile look where the key should be, its not.
My host said to open a new account with Word Press, I did and got a API key from them.
I was able to activate the stats on my original blog: http://blog.puppetgov.com/
but when I click on the WP stats to see the stats, it still comes up saying “THE API KEY “XXXXXX” belongs to the WP account of
“puppetgovvvvv” (that’s the new one I just got)
If this is not your account please renter your API key.”So how do I get the stats to work or more importantly how do I just get my orginal API key for my first blog back? I have long lost the email that had it. My host people do not have it either.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

If the key is not displayed on your “your profile” page in the wordpress.COM dashboard, you will probably have to contact support directly. http://support/wordpress.COM/contact/

Curious, what are the purposes of an API key? Do we get extra services through other sites with the key?

According to the support page, questions about Akismet should be directed to http://akismet.com/contact/
AFAIK, the only purpose of the key is for use with the Akismet spam plug-in

If you use the firefox plug in Scribe fire you NEED an API key in order to post. Now I’m looking for mine because when Scribe Fire updated it LOST my key. But yeah. Stats, Akismet and Scribe fire.

If the API key does not show under users > your profile, then contact staff: http://support.wordpress.com/contact/ . Also, all questions regarding Akismet in general should go to Akismet’s support. Any questions regarding the blog stats plugin should go directly to staff here at wordpress.COM. Few volunteers here in the forum have any experience with setting up Akismet or the blog stats plugin because it is already set up for us here when we get a blog.
