How do I scale a page? & Lost picture
-
My blog wasn’t ready, so I was posting privately. Except for a size issue, it seemed to be fine. I published publicly and the picture (part of the Bostwick theme) was GONE. This is a page for a book, and the book/’s cover was displayed along the left side of the page.
In addition, the page needs to be sized. Everything is too large– won’t fit unless displayed in a very large window.
I began working on the second issue in a Chat, but had to stop when boarding plane. (last Friday). I no longer have the option of starting a chat as I did before. How do I start a chat?
I am one of the two administrators on the blog, but I am the one editing the page, so please respond to the email below. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The issue where the header wasn’t appearing on single posts in Bushwick was a bug that’s been fixed. Your header image is appearing here now:

In addition, the page needs to be sized. Everything is too large– won’t fit unless displayed in a very large window.
Bushwick is designed to be responsive, which means that the layout and content automatically adjusts to fit different screen sizes. If you see a specific page or post where something doesn’t look right, could you please let me know in what browser/version, device, and on what page or post? A screenshot would also be helpful.

Some of the folks who’ve just joined WordPress.com get a live chat option for their first two weeks. If you’d like to have live chat available beyond that window, it’s available available to our WordPress.com Business users Monday to Friday, 7am-7pm Eastern, along with other nifty things like ecommerce and unlimited premium themes.
Just let me know if you need further help.

Yesterday I posted all the data you request (screenshots, OS, browser) to a question similar to mine. I’ve searched Bushwick, but the search finds “Bushwick” only in the query title. You can find them in my media library.

the following three:

http://comedyunderattack.com/?attachment_id=47Bushwick is NOT responsive: it demands a very large window. The link you gave me (http://comedyunderattack.com/2014/02/18/comedy-under-attack/) goes to a page that produces the following:
http://comedyunderattack.com/?attachment_id=54
The title of the page (it’s not a blog; it’s a web page for a book) remains fixed over the picture. The words are still cut off as before, according to the size of the screen. The title should be black, on right side of page, over the text. This is more like what I’d like to have:

I don’t remember how I did it. I made it as a sample. I don’t care which theme I use. Bushwick was the only one that I found that allowed a vertical picture.I hope you can help me.

Thank you for taking the time to post screenshots about the issue where the left header image wasn’t appearing for single posts in Bushwick. I see that issue has been fixed.
It sounds to me like the Bushwick isn’t really displaying the way you’d like. Would it work for you if I tried to help you find a different theme that better fits what you’re trying to do?
One thing that might work really well for you would be to switch to a clean and simple theme, like Twenty Twelve, and then make a home page where you add the vertical picture into the main content area. It won’t look exactly the same as http://comedyunderattack.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/cuaweb.jpg but I bet I could help you get something closer to that.
Here is an example of the full width page page in Twenty Twelve. Imagine using this page but adding a vertical image on the left side below the title.

What do you think?

Hi Kathryn,
I’m not sure how your suggestion will work. Perhaps I should explain again what I want to accomplish. I am doing this for a friend who has a written a book and wants to be able to direct prospective readers to a web site for the book. With http://comedyunderattack.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/cuaweb.jpg
I was trying to achieve a page with the image of the book, its title (as the title of the page), and a blurb describing the book. The author would also like to add excerpts from the book (perhaps on a different page?) and an “about the author” page. If you can help me achieve that, please do!
The screen shot I referenced above resulted from a flexible theme (I determined the layout). I’d like to go back to that, but I don’t remember what it was called. -
Let’s see if I can help! There’s a couple of steps you’d need to take to get it set up:
Since you’re not using the site as a blog, the first thing you’d do is set up a static page as the front page, instead of displaying the latest blog posts, which is the default. You’d do that by creating a new page called Home or Welcome, and selecting “static page” under Settings > Reading, next to “Front page displays.” You’d select your welcome page from the dropdown menu. Here’s the full guide to setting a static page as the homepage:
On your front (welcome) page, you’d select the full-page template to remove the sidebar, by selecting it from the Page Attributes box, which looks like this:
You can add your text to the editor, and then insert an image of the book cover into the page using the “Add media” button in the editor. If you click the “align left” button, your text wraps around around the right side of the image, like you see in this guide:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-alignment/You can easily add new pages by going to Pages > Add New. They will automatically appear in the menu at the top.
Let me know if this helps!

Thank you. I’m going to try it out now.
The Page Attributes box has only “Parent” and “Order” — no Template with drop-down menu. So I can’t remove the sidebar.

Sorry– after changing theme the template option showed up. I selected “Full-width template, no sidebar.” So far, so good.
This is how it looks now:

Smile! You’re at the best WordPress.com site everand replace it with
<p style=”text-align: center;”>Comedy Under Attack
The Golden Age and the Headwinds </p>The first line should be in a larger font than the second.
Once I do that, I can delete the blog title that’s just above the picture and text.
-
Do you have any ideas for making the text look better? I’ve tried using a larger picture, but that’s worse.
I’m waiting to hear how much more text there will be (excerpts from book). I think they should go on another page, but if the picture and the descriptive blurb are the only two elements on the page besides the title and link to Amazon (for purchasing), there has to be a better way to organize them.

It’s coming along!
How do I get rid of
comedyunderattack
Smile! You’re at the best WordPress.com site everThat’s the Site Title and Tagline, and you can change them both under Settings > General. It’s not possible to add HTML in those fields. It sounds like you want “Comedy Under Attack” as the site title and “The Golden Age and the Headwinds” as the tagline.
It looks like your front page is showing your latest blog posts, instead of a static page. That means it’s not displaying with the full width template. If you want to make it look less like a blog and have the content take up the full width of the page, you’ll need to go through the steps I mentioned earlier to set the front page as a static page, under Settings > Reading. Once you follow the steps, your sidebar will disappear and you’ll be able to insert a big picture of the book cover, more like your mockup from earlier.

Why don’t we see what it looks like after you’ve set up your static front page and added an image of the book cover?
Let me know how it goes!

Help!
As I mentioned earlier, I had already set the static page and full-width template. There was no sidebar.
Following your directions, I again went to settings/reading. Static page was unchecked. I checked it. I saw no option for full-width template. When I viewed the page with the new changes, the picture and text were gone and there was a sidebar. What gives??? -
You’ll need to publish at least one page first, in order to select it under Settings > Reading as your front page. Until you publish it, the option to select a static page will be hidden. This is so you don’t accidentally have a blank front page. :-)
After you publish this page, which is currently a draft:
https://comedyunderattack.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=56&action=edit
Head over to Settings > Reading:
https://comedyunderattack.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php
You’ll be able to select it as your static front page at that point.
It looks like it’s already set to use the full-width template, so that’s ready to go.
Let me know how it goes!

I have changed the theme to Syntax. I want to eliminate everything at the bottom of the page, beginning with the two search boxes and everything below them. How do I do this?
-
I eliminated the stuff on the bottom.
Now, on the Home page, I’d like the title, Comedy Under Attack, on one line with the subtitle or tag line on a separate line beneath the title, preferably in a smaller font. In order to do that, do I need to get the Custom Design upgrade? Or can I do it on the template with CSS? -
The second problem is the lack of buttons that represent each page. Do I need a different template in order to have buttons for “Home” and “About the Author” and “Excerpts”?
-
It looks like you’ve switched to McKinley now – it’s looking great!
