How do I see what part of uploaded pictures will be seen on the featured articles widget?

  • Unknown's avatar

So, I have the featured articles widget on my front page… It scrolls through a few different articles, and I have selected to have featured photos included on this slider. That said, i can’t seem to figure out how to control the featured images that go with the slider… A lot of them are cropped poorly, and some are bigger than others (so if you are reading an article on the homepage, the text pops down, and then back up each time the slider cycles through an off-sized image). How do I control, crop, and shape the images on the slider?

    Hi!

The best way to control how the images appear would be to crop/upload them in the size specified by the theme (880×290). There isn’t an easy way to configure which portion of the image is displayed. However, if you upload the images or crop them into that size, they should all be standardized. Can you give that a try?

Cropping instructions can be found here:

That doesn’t seem to help using the photo editor available. In fact, i went through and cropped some of the images and clicked save, and the changes didn’t seem to get saved. It seems like the only hope is to crop to that size prior to upload. One other issue I can’t figure out though is that at the very least, all but one of the images I used is the same size in the slider; but one of them (the first one) is quite a bit taller. I can’t figure out why. When you go through and look at the images used, they are not all the same aspect ratio.

The cropping appears to be working correctly on my side. Here’s a screencast as an example:

Could you let me know the title of an image you’re trying to crop so I can take a look?

The issue is the first image is 595 × 295, which means the theme tried to enlarge it to fit the 880 width (hence increasing the size to avoid skewing the shot). The other photos appear to be much larger, which allows the theme to crop them down.

Provided you upload a larger image, the slider images should all be the same height. However, if you would like to control exactly how the shot looks, the best option is to upload the images at 880×290 or crop to that size.

Ok, that’s helpful. Thanks a lot.

So, I went through and tried to fix a bunch of these, but the same thing keeps happening. I crop, and save, and then click update, and the photo turns into a broken image icon, and then the image does not appear on the website any more… Examples are:
    img_0954.jpg
    img_0968.jpg
    img_09541.jpg
    etc… there’s a bunch now.

Ack – so sorry about this @cjkalman! There’s a bug we’re currently working on that causes images to break when more than one change is made to them (cropping and rotating for example).

The main solution here would be to reupload the images in the designated size. The fix has been implemented in WordPress.org so it should be included in WordPress.com soon. If you’re curious, here’s the relevant code fix:

Oh, okay. Well, at least I don’t feel crazy and incompetent now. Hope that change goes live soon.

I’ll let you know as soon as this gets fixed!
