How do I set a category?

    My posts so far have not had a category. How important is this and how might I set a category, such as, Mathematics?

    Add a category walk through
    -> Dashboard -> Manage -> Categories -> Categories (add new)
    Complete the required information and click the “add category” button to save.

    The importance of using categories
    Tags used within post content aren’t collected by WordPress.com for use in such directories. Only tags used as categories are included. So if you write about mathematics and include a tag in your post content to “Mathematics ” but you don’t have a category in your sidebar for “Mathematics ” then you won’t get that post in the “Mathematics ” tag in the WordPress.com Tag list. Others looking for bloggers who are writing on mathematics will not find your blog. Right now, it isn’t a Tag list but a Category list that you see.

    Not using categories for your blog is like giving away links to your blog. It’s also an easy way for search engine spiders to know how to index your blog.

    Unless that stuff doesn’t matter to you. It’s really a person cloice and it concerns the purpose of your blog.

    I have now been into the sequence

    dashboard->Manage->categories->…add new

    and I think I have created a category , Mathematics.

    I then went to a new post and did see a category Mathematics listed on the right of my window. I checked a box and hope that now means the post (test post only) is listed as mathematics in searches.

    I have not however seen any reference to Tags in any of this and am still not sure whether i have done all the right things necessary.

    Yes, you have done well. Here it is on the wordpress tag page http://wordpress.com/tag/mathematics/
    This is how I found it. At the bottom of the post you see the categories:
    Posted in Mathematics | No Comments »
    Mathematics is a “linked” word so I clicked on it and VOILA! I was seeing the post on the wordpress tag page.
    And now if you click on your Mathematics category title in the sidebar you find this page.
    http://ashtangajoy.wordpress.com/tag/mathematics/
    You can also create sub-categories under Mathematics by creating a new category and selecting Mathematics as the “parent” category.
    Mathematics
    *Algebra
    *Geometery
