How do I set Classic Editor to the default?

  • Unknown's avatar

The new editor is terrible. After using it for a while, I’ve come to the conclusion it’s useless. It’s a terrible UI, it won’t let me add more than 3 tags, I can’t set categories, and it has other problems. Every time, I have to go back into Classic to finish it. Even works, from the ‘All Posts’ dashboard, I click on ‘Classic Editor’ and rather than going straight into it, WP pops up another dialog asking me if I really want to do it.

BS. Let me keep the Classic as default.

  • Hi there,

It is not possible to set the classic editor to be the default, but you can continue to use it now for the time being, by going to your wp-admin dashboard instead.

it won’t let me add more than 3 tags, I can’t set categories, and it has other problems.

The classic editor will be fully retired at some point, so we’d like to address whatever issues you’re running into before then. Can you tell me more about your issue with adding tags and categories? When I try on my test site I am able to add categories and multiple tags without issue. Video at this link: https://d.pr/v/6yyh6X

When you try to add more that 3 tags something else happens? Thanks for the additional info!

When I add three tags, the tag option on the rhs goes away.

I mentioned other problems. The basic one is that the Classic view had all the options readily available around the text area, while the new one has nothing. Just about everything has disappeared. It’s not intuitive, it’s not useful.

There’s a difference between improving the text editing and making the surrounding meta information unavailable. The first can be good, the second never is.

If you add four tags separated by commas and click “save draft” top right indeed only the first three are saved. If you add tags one at a time and hit enter each time you can save as many tags as you like. Saying Separate with commas or the Enter key. is confusing if using one way or the other produces different results. It’s not obvious if you need to click “options” or “settings” to even reach the right menu with tags.

    A) That’s not the way it worked for me
    B) It misses the larger point
    C) For instance, it has nothing to do with categories no longer being visible
    D) Just because you never use WP but have opinions doesn’t mean you have a clue what customers want.

Again, nothing changes about the fact that you’re not improving the UI, you’re making it worse. When you can admit that the edit box and the rest of the settings are different issues, you’ll be on the road to recovery.

    ???????????
I’m sorry if you didn’t like my post. I am a WordPress.com user just like yourself and was merely noting that I got similar results when adding tags in the hope that staff might investigate further.

  • Hi folks, the WordPress open source project is driving changes in the block editor. We’re all community members in this case. Let’s be sure to keep the conversation productive.

Thanks you @themagicrobot for helping here. It looks like this issue has been reported in a few incarnations. I posted what I see here:

I think that a partial explanation as to why the two of you obtained different results lies in the fact that in the block editor there are places to enter tags in two separate panels of the sidebar.

    1. The module that does the disappearing trick is in the panel that opens when you click the Publish button (strange design feature that, a publish button that doesn’t publish), and it’s titled “Suggestion: Add tags.” This tags module seems to be a secondary one, perhaps meant as a reminder to those who might have previously forgotten, or not thought of, adding tags. The primary tags module is in another panel of the post editor sidebar (see 2. below).

I didn’t find a limit to the number of tags I could add in this location if I separated them by commas, but I did find that if I paused long enough then the module disappears. However, the added tags didn’t disappear, because they were automatically saved and could be found in the other tags module (see 2. below). I did tests of between 3 and 10 tags, and each trial was successful unless I waited too long between the adding of one tag and the next, which caused the module to close/disappear.

    2. The principle tags module is in the main panel of the post editor sidebar, when it is in “post” rather than “block” mode. Again I found no limit to the number of tags separated by commas I could add at this location. The difference in this case is that there is no time limit between the additions. I waited minutes while I was typing here and the tags field still remained open. I did tests of 5, 7, and 10 tags, and was successful in each trial.

There is no such bar as shown on the rhs of your image in the video. No, I’m not in full screen mode. It’s a blank screen with only the block in the middle.

BTW: this is on the WP site. Thankfully, my domain server for my business site is still running only the Classic version.

  • Hmmm, the full option goes away? Could you get a screenshot of that, and add it at https://wordpress.com/media please? Also, do you see the same thing in another browser, just as a test to rule out issues?
