How do I set up my blog in 2 languages?

How do I set up my blog in 2 languages? I would like to write in 2 languages. Now it is in Finnish, and I would like to write the same things in English for the global followers.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Jonna – the easiest way is to link to the Google translation of your site in a Text Widget in your footer, or as a direct link in your Custom Menu. For example, to link to the English translation, you’d include a link like this:

    <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fjohannahurmerinta.com%2F">Read in English</a>

Hi and thanks, but I dont want to use Google translator. Not good quality ;-) I write myself, that is not the problem :) The question is: How do I set up the 2nd page, which I wish to have in English; can I have different language flags on the first page, and from there readers can click to other languages?

  • Hi Jonna – to do this, you can use categories or tags. You’d write each post in Finnish and then in English. You’d add all the Finnish posts to the “Finnish” category (or tag) and all the English posts to the “English” category (or tag). Then, you could upload the flag icons to your Media Library and use a Text Widget in your sidebar to display the links to those category (or tag) archive pages. You’d add something like this to the Text Widget:

<div><a href="http://johannahurmerinta.com/category/english/"><img class="alignnone" title="Click here to read in English" src="[full image URL for the flag icon]"/></a></div>

Or, you could use a Custom Menu and category pages to put the links in your menu itself. Here’s a guide for how to set that up: Category Pages

Let me know if you have further questions about this!

Thank you! This sounds like the advice I was looking for. Must decide now if to go with category or custom menu. Maybe the custom menu is the thing (as I also wish to not have all the post showing fully on the same page – rather have them grouped and visually nicer)

  • Hi Johanna – A Custom Menu might be best then, because if you do that, you can also set up a static Front Page, so that all of your posts only appear on those two category pages. That would solve the problem of them all appearing under one another on the same page.

Give it a try, and let me know if you get stuck! :)
