How do I shorten a post to display a summary only?
-
If I write a long post I would like it to appear shortened with a link for the reader to expand it to read. Showing more posts per page rather then scrolling on and on to the next post.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Use the more tag when you write the post. On the post listings page (both archive and homepage) it will only display the post up until the more tag and then a link to “continue reading.”
The step by step is here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

I always keep the first 2 or three posts and full length and then update the older ones, so yeah you can do it after the fact. I just looked at your front back and they have “click here to read more” for the first two posts. Did you make that link or is that using a more tag?

The setting here > Settings > Reading is only for the RSS Feed summary and does not affect the posts. If you want to display only excerpts on the front page of the blog followed by read more links, you can insert “the more tag” into each post prior to publication.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/Alternatively, you can switch to using a theme that automatically displays front page excerpts. This is a list of active themes on WordPress.com that use the excerpt instead of full post content. Here are the themes that do provide that feature > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/theme-with-automatic-excerpts?replies=13#post-1396410
P.S.I never ever display full posts because doing so slow down page loading time and many people using a variety of devices to view blogs will click out before the site fully loads.
